How unfortunate that they didn't do one for Antarctica as well. I can just see a 32 Winchester Special (I think this is what Shackleton used during his ordeal) double rifle engraved with PENGUINS!

Best,
John

I have a Mod.99 .22 Savage Hipower which was used to shoot seals to feed the sled-dogs on arctic expeditions 1919 to 1923. It was a litle more affordable than Holt's offerings!
...and NO! No penguins!

Check out the .303 double for Australia engraved with water buff' and red 'roo, its not often if at all you see a rifle with these animals engraved. I think the calibre is to light for buff but that would not put me off in owning this rifle! only the price.....! I will stick with my Lithgow .303.

John,
Could you give any additional information on a .32 Special being used during that expedition? Was it a Model 94?
I have one that passed the century mark a while ago and am interested in this caliber.
Thanks,
Ben

To Frank Wild's left you will see a Winchester lever and I am nearly certain, if I recall the diaries correctly, that it was a Model 94 and in .32 Special. I am digging online to find an equipment list as I type this since my Shackleton books are all in the US. Meanwhile, enjoy the picture.
Best,
John
Correction: I just found two reputable references online that refer to the rifle as a 30-30. Not surprising I suppose....better sectional density to penetrate on Leopard Seals.
