Been looking for a double: Hermann's Sporting Guns lists a 140 in 470 Nitro for $5219.00 (US dollars.) Over here in North America the best I've seen has been $6500.00 and up. Sounds like a decent price for a new Merkel or am I missing something?
Was also thinking about a 9.3x74R but that seems a little light for the big stuff (and often illegal too, I understand, depending on where you hunt.)

A Merkel .470 for US$5.2K is too good to be true! Is it in good shape?
The lighter calibers sell for less.

Those rifles are listed as new.
Hermann's Sporting Guns: Price List
MERKEL 140 A DOUBLE BARREL SIDE BY SIDE DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE, GREENER CROSS BOLT WITH DOUBLE UNDER BARREL LOCKING LUGS ,COCKING INDICATORS, SIDE CLIPS AND RECEIVER LEDGE, CASE HARDENED RECEIVER, IN CAL. 375 H&H,416 RIGBY, 470 NE. A$8999 US$5219 NEW
The higher-grade engraved model is more in line with the US prices you quoted, jscybercat:
MERKEL 140 A DOUBLE BARREL SIDE BY SIDE DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE, GREENER CROSS BOLT WITH DOUBLE UNDER BARREL LOCKING LUGS , COCKING INDICATORS, SIDE CLIPS AND RECEIVER LEDGE, FULLY HAND ENGRAVED, IN CAL. 375 H&H,416 RIGBY, 470 NE. A$10999 US$6495 NEW
Just from what I can gather from the web and this forum, double rifles both new and used are priced much more sensibly in Australia than the US. This is especially so for vintage Brit guns. In fact I better shut up about this, its been a well-kept secret for years!

A$8999 at todays exchang rate is NOT US$5219 NEW but US $6659
Even if it was US$5219, by the time you add Air Freight costs (you can't post it), Customs Broker clearance charges, Duty on Import of the gun, FFL Dealer charges, Insurance (unless you want to take the risk), the difference would not be that great.
And then you have the time between paying for it and waiting for your Import Licence (?Form 6?) to arrive which at the moment seem to take ages to get processed.
For a total saving of how much ?

You may want to find out if Hermann's actually have them in stock or not.

I haven't emailed them yet but you're right, often an advertised item is actually not in stock.
According to what I've read it's quite easy to ship from Australia to Canada: less paperwork than shipping to the USA. If it sells for 5219 US that works out to about 6140 CND: still a good pile of change but better than 6500 US; about 7647 CND. I wouldn't mind a little hassle and shipping/brokering etc. for that much difference. I could go and pick the thing up in person and still be ahead (maybe.)
And, hopefully, our wretched gun registry will be soon be history! Even less paperwork. Only wasted 2 billion CND on it.
I'll keep you all posted. I'm planning on a purchase this coming fall (selling the calves.)
