Nope, but you must have been looking at Thad Scott's offering and thinking the same thing I was thinking.

500 is a nice round number, either followed by "Nitro Express" or by "cubic inch displacement".

Bulldog;
I have one now, have owned 3 others and handled
quite a few. Almost all Rodda's are solid, working
pieces and with care will outlast you. I have only seen
one "Best" with Roddas name on it but all are worth
owning, even the very plain Black Powder rifles. If
you are looking at the 475 on Thad Scott's site, PM me.
Merry Christmas to all.

I have one in 450-400 3". It is my "using" double, and even with rough bores it still groups as well at 100 yards as most vintage doubles (around 2 1/2" for 2L and 2R).

It's not fancy, but it is solid. Mine is a bit on the heavy side for caliber at 11 pounds 2 ounces.

Jim

Only reason I ask is I saw an ad that looked interesting. Pasted below;

Best quality R.B.Rodda, London & Calcutta, sidelock non-ejector hammerless double rifle in 577/500 calibre. 28" steel barrels with one fixed and four folding sights, Purdey style third bite, and extremely good bores. Raised rib hand file cut at breech and muzzles, flip up moon sights. Back action sidelock with crystal cocking windows, and profusely scroll engraved, retaining 50% original case colours. Top tang extends over comb. Cheek piece pistol grip stock with original hard rubber pad. Lever fastening fore-end. In its original best quality oak and leather case with trade label, oil bottle, sling, ammo and cleaning gear. A magificient best quality rifle originally built for the Game Warden of Kenya. Normal License Required $NZ20000
$US13000

What do you guys think?

Of course it "sounds" wonderful... but - the first thing to figure out is what is the seller's idea of "extremely good bores?" His idea may be different than yours and this is the one thing that is the most important to it shooting and also the most expensive to replace.

The only thing that potentially concerns me in the description is that it was built for a Kenyan game warden. Unless he passed away early on in his career and his wife let his gun sit in closet for 50-years, odds are this gun has seen some hard use - as most would have been in this profession.

That's not to say that it has to be worn slap-out, but it is to say be cautious and have a professional you trust look it over before sealing the deal.

Rodda's are usually severely plain, but serviceable, and are usually better that their market value might suggest. The higher grade guns can be quite nice. But, keep in mind that the Cogswell's and Rodda's have long been the unloved, red-headed stepchildren of the British trade and neither sells particularly well even today. For a nice SL BPE Rodda, the price doesn't excite me that much.

How do you know it is a BPE? Is it because they don't say Nitro anywhere?

Caliber. The .577/.500 Express was something of a Rodda specialty.

Certainly this is most likely a BP rifle, but the hammerless sidelock configuration with fluid-steel barrels does hint at the possibility of a 'nitro-for-black' chambering, or even the rare full-nitro load. That, and the asking price!! A check of the proof-marks would be highly recommended in this case.

Nah. Nitro for black is still a BPE, and examples of the 3 1/8" full nitro cartridge are so rare that it's doubtful that it ever actually made it into production, or that any rifles were ever chambered for it.
