.505 Gibbs Rifles
      #42791 - 02/12/05 04:02 PM

Could someone tell me what rifles the .505 Gibbs cartridge was available in back in the 1920's & 30's. I know it was a Gibbs propietary round, but did only Gibbs chamber for it?

Thanks

Origionally I belive that only Gibbs made the rifles but later, some were made in europe!

Until the 70's or so I understand that only betweeb 20 and 30 rifles were made in 505 Gibbs. More in 500 Jeffery by the german originator of the round!

The George Gibbs firm is now owned by another company called I M Crudgington. They are still in existence and could give you details if you want them. Try contacting them through this website. They are a forum of the British gun trade and could help. I think Griffin and Howe and Hoffman Arms also made some guns in the US.

Is this question about a specific gun that you're planning to buy or is it a general one?

Best wishes and good hunting!

Just a general question. I knew that Hoffman Arms turned out a few, but did not know if any makers made them for stock.

I'm no expert but did any company make the 505 as a general production chambering? From what I have read very few were made on special order by the various companies in the US, Britain and Europe. CZ now makes it's 550 in the caliber though there have been mixed reviews of them by people who have bought them as you would undoubtedly have seen on these forums.

Thanks for posting some very interesting questions. I hope that someone who knows this well would post answers.

Good hunting!

George Gibbs made them although whether they held stock prior
to WW11 I can't say.

I believe most were built on the Magnum Mauser action.

A company called "Surrey ???" also made some in 505 Gibbs
but I'm not too sure what action.

I know of 4 Original George Gibbs Magnum Mauser 505 Gibbs
rifles and that is all I have ever seen or found - not that I've looked
too hard - but I believe only about 70 were made pre WWII.
