Interarms Mk. X (Whitworth) cartridge size
      #41222 - 11/11/05 06:07 AM

I have an Interarms Mk. X (Whitworth marked) action (only), unused, still in original box. .458 Win Mags will fit (easily) in the magazine and will fit the bolt face and will extract. My question is: How do I determine if this action is long enough to take the .458 lott? .416 Rigby will fit in the magazine but its obvious they are to long to extract loaded (also hard to feed out of the magazine box). Is there an easy way to determine if my action is large enough for the .458 lott?

Funds are somewhat limited and I'm really just looking for something big bore to shoot. I have the action and I have a nice piece of walnut to put it in.

Thanks,

jlbell

It can be opened up for the Lott. Your gunsmith will have to lengthen the magazine and massage the feed rails & ramp. My .300 H&H was built on a .458 length Mark X action and that is what my 'smith did. It is now wearing a .375 H&H barrel. I have been shooting that gun for 20 years or so opened up and it has never given me any problems. One thing I would recommend is having a gunsmith who has built dangerous gane rifles do your work.

I handled quite a few when we sold them new, but I don't remember whether the 458 had the same length action as the 375. If so, why wouldn't it handle the lott with ease?

Well, I hope that is the case! I'll have someone who builds rifles take a look at it.

Thanks,

They are 2 different length actions. But what my 'smith did was what Interarms did at the factory. It is a simple and realatively easy job.

The action itself is the same length between the 375 & 458. The magazine box on the 375 is extended in the front. The extension is made so that the trigger guard for the 375 & 458 will both fit in opening in the bottom of the stock. Depending on the inletting some internal wood removal might be required. The feed ramp is then altered to match. I can't speak as to how much the rails are opened.

Just my 2 cents.

WyoJoe,

I thought they would be the same basic action. They can be re-worked to take a Lott, much as Dennis Olson turned my dad's old Mdl 70 in '06 into a 375 H&H for me, with the addition of a barrel from Ray Atkinson's stash of old parts...

By the way, I have a minty original Win 70 pre '64 30-06 barrel for sale.

ramrod340 said it the way I should of. The action is the same size but the magazine is different. Dennis Olson was the one that built my .375. It is the same action that my .300 H&H was on.

I took a couple of pictures as a visual aid. Do not have an Interarms to compare to, but the Pre64 Winchesters should illustrate it well enough.

Original .30-06 (1954) Action is here.

Original .375 H&H (1955) Action is here.

The bolts side by side are here.

Obviously the magazines are different, as are the feed rails. You can see from the pictures how Winchester got the .375 to feed into the magazine by trimming the rear ring back for the longer cartridge. I would imagine all that is needed for the Lott conversion on the Interarms would be some similar feed rail modification for the longer cartridge, some trimming of the rear reciever ring, and a longer magazine box.

I appreciate everyone’s input. I was under the impression that the action I have would handle the .458 Lott, but in "over thinking" the idea, I started to wonder. I believe it will work, and "iwantadouble's" pics showed me something I wasn't thinking about (Opening up the rear to accept the cartridge). I've talked (briefly) to a riflesmith and looks like we can get started first of the year.

Thanks for your help

Jerry
