458 followed me home

I just had to have the Safari Browning
in 458 WM. It was made in 1972. I checked
no salt wood. The action is not bedded.
The rifle has not been shot much. No cracks
in the stock. Should I have it bedded anyway?
What recoil reducer(s) would you install. I dont
think it weighs more than 8 lbs. I will install
optics at some point. I am thinking I want it
at 10 to 11 lbs.

I would defenately have the action bedded, and if the stock dosn't have cross bolts, I would have two installed.

I would also have the stock refinished as I never liked the BOWLING PIN FINISH that Browning used on their guns. All will check or show small cracks in time detracting from the looks of the rifle. I have always prefered hand rubbed oil finish on my guns.

The above are my opinions and are not ment to detract from your rifle as the Browning Safari rifles are truly fine rifles.

The stock has 2 crossbolts. The barrel
has a lug on it also. I think I will
have it bedded too.

The floor plate appears to be
"locked" ; but I dont see how.
This is a good thing. I just want
to understand it. What type of
optics would be best? The stock
is rather tall on the iron sights
so I should be ok with a belled
objective.

Suggest a Leupold
1.5 - 5 x 20 or similar
small power scope.

They don't have a belled objective
(straight tube) but PLENTY of
eye relief and handle the recoil well.

The 2 low power scopes from Leupold
are THE standard.

Get it bedded and a new recoil pad and a Leupold 1.75-4 or wahterever it is.

8 pounds? Someday you will wish it weighed less!

It has a similar stock as my post 64 Mod. 70, which weighs 8.3 lbs. It is just fine and not too light.
