Hornady Interbonds in 416 cal for water buffalo
      #39822 - 26/10/05 12:53 PM

I am wandering about the performance of these bullets and would like to try them in an inminent water buffalo hunt ...

Has anyone had the opportunity to try them and form an opinion as to performance compared to say, the Woodleigh 400gr or 410gr?

WOuld their controlled expansion be sufficient enough to have proper needed penetration on water buffalo ?

Surely there are much better options, but they are the only choice I have to use wth my own reloaded .416 RM cartridges ... perhaps I might need a charge stopper and I was wondering if they could be consider so ...

Afrikaander

Woodleigh make
340gr PP SN
410gr RN SN
410gr FMJ
450gr RN SN

Re "perhaps I might need a charge stopper "

A charge stopper is a FMJ and that's about it.
It is the only way to "guarantee" straight line pnetration
through bone, boss, horn etc etc

That's why I always load the last 1 or 2 rounds in a Mag
as FMJ's - either coming at you or going away, you need
a FMJ.

Couldn't agree more with Alan - doubt Hornadys would be anywhere near as good as Woodleighs. They are normally soft as and I doubt they would be a "stopper"

I thought Phil Shoemaker's replies to Afrikaander's same questions over on Accurate Reloading might be of interest to eveyrone. Phil is a fairly well known brown bear guide in Alaska. Remember, he's taking about the new Hornady InterBonds and not the old InterLocks. The InterBonds are a bonded core bullet.

More info here on Hornady's web site:
Hornady InterBond Round Nose

458 Cal., 500 gr. InterBond RN
416 Cal., 400 gr. InterBond RN
375 Cal., 300 gr. InterBond RN

Phil's posts to Afrikaander from AR:

I tested both the .416 and .458 Hornady soft nosed bullets this past season and could not completely destroy them even by firing them into rock. I certainly would feel perfectly safe and secure using them on anything a soft nosed bullet is suitable for. In fact they may become a new favorite in .375, .416 and .458.
- Phil Shoemaker

I probably answered your question in another forum as well but from my experience the new Hornady Interbond in .416 is one of the best soft nosed bullets now avaliable and again, from my experience, will give deeper and more reliable penetration than the Woodleighs I have tried.

Bfaucett

Interesting - no substitute for experience. They must be quite a formidable projectile now. It will be interesting to see how they go on Buff.

mlg,

I think these Hornadys will be worth keeping an eye on. Reports from the field will tell the tale, though. Still, I found Phil's comments to be interesting. But, for you guys in Australia, I think I'd keep using the Woodleighs. I would imagine that you can buy them at a better price than we can here in the States.

BTW: I'm a big fan of Woodleigh bullets. I've used them twice now on plains game hunts in South Africa and have been very satisfied. I used the 220 gr Woodleigh RN in my .30-06 back in 2002. I used the 220 gr Woodleigh RN in my 8x57JS and the 286 gr Woodleigh RN in my 9.3x62 just this past August (2005). All worked great. On both trips, my PH was very pleased when he learned I would be using Woodleighs. They seem to have a very good reputation in South Africa.

Cheers,
-Bob F.
