Rodda 577 2 3/4 BPE

Here is another Rodda 577 2 3/4 BPE I picked up recently. The rifle has heavy relief engraving, and was possibly built as an exhibition piece. The stock has been replaced at some point, although the fore end appears to be original timber.
A nice old rifle with lovely bright bores and decent rifling.

Those lion and tiger together encounters, engraving on one side plate. And maybe a leopard and a cheetah on the other.

The butt appears to have some cast. Or is it off cast? I forget? Butt slightly bent to the right.

Nice rifle.

Thanks, it is certainly a little different from the std engraving. I have some nitro for black load data, but would like to develop a black powder load for it at some point.

Thanks John. The stock is actually straight with no cast. The photo certainly looks that way though.

Its a cat gun.

The lion andbtoger together are unusual. But lions did exist in the Gir Forestbl of Western India.

The other panel shows spotted cats. One has a thicker neck. So a leopard. Maybe one is a Jaguar? But one has a a less bull head and a thinner neck, so I'm suggesting a cheetah.

I love these old hammer guns. Can NFB loads be used in it?

The standard load is 160 grains BP behind a 520 or 560 lead bullet, although Kynoch listed a 480 grain which could be a starting load (assuming the inside is as good as the outside!)

I now only shoot BP in any of my guns/rifles, unless nitro proofed

That is a wonderful rifle and veru nice loading gear. Have fun shooting it. Post some pictures of targets and loads.

I have a real soft spot for the underlever hammer doubles as well John. The rifle came with some loaded NFB cartridges, however I won't be using those. Definitely want to load some black powder rounds for it though.

Thanks TH. Agree with you on the BP loads for the BP proofed rifles. I understand why people use NFB loads, but I think using BP is half the fun!

Nice to see a double with the hammers in the correct location and the engraving is pretty special. Beautiful rifle.
