Fabulous And Unique Westley Richards .577 3" Double Rifle

The continued popularity of the .577 Nitro Express with Westley Richards customers is quite remarkable. Half a century ago, many would have considered it obsolete and the shedding of European colonies and overseas territories in the 1950s and ‘60s led to a widespread assumption that the days of hunters heading into the African bush in search of big game were numbered.

However, the passion for hunting elephant and buffalo (the primary recipients of these 750-grain bullets) is, if anything, increasing and our order book continues to feature new-build .577 NE, double rifles, alongside the more usual shotguns, and magazine rifles for deer stalking.

I like this charging rhino engraving. Straight out of a Stewart Granger movie!

This huge tusker Tembo is pretty good as well.

And the herd of cape buffalo bulls in circular defensive formation,

The trifecta of .577 quarry dangerous game.

I'd like to know their wood finishing regime.
& just look at that wood-to-metal fit.
Now THAT'S a set of tusks.

Secret process involving the liquefaction of wood.
The action is placed in a mold fixture and the wood poured into the mold.
It's actually simple and takes no skill at all.
They get the checkering done in one fell swoop.

The scenes are almost certainly an actual photo or painting transcribed as an engraving.

How is it done? Hand engraved? Or dare I saw it, computer engraved? By some method?

The charging black rhino is absolutely from a black and white photo, possibly a video still.

The elephant engraving is also familiar, The elephant named something like "Mahorjob" comes to mind. A great tusker.

I really like the engravings on this rifle.

At Westley Richards I wonder at this rifles price.

Everything about it is magnificent. The engraving is not what I would want on a rifle but the skill and quality is incredible as is the stock work. I would want it buried with me.
