Jeffery .600 NE double rifle underlever
      #387756 - 17/11/24 12:08 AM

J. Corry, a forums member posted this on the NE FB group:
"The big ol 600 W J Jeffery has arrived back in her homeland. She has certainly been missed."

Made in 1914 for the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

Underlever. Made on a Leonard action.

"Weight is about 14.5lbs. Was originally in India then sold at Christie’s in the late 70s and then went to Rhodesia."

In answer to my query.

Lovely. Wood to metal fit just doesn't get any better than that.

That's not a Jones under-lever. It's a push-forward snap lever.

Great looking gun in nice condition! The case looks to be original to the gun.

Master John CORRY sold me 9 new PURDEY’s. He is a gun WIZARD. I now have 600 h&h Purdey and boss 600s. This gun excites me.

Wow, what a beautiful gun. Wonderfully finsihed and embellished but so no much that it would eb a safe queen.

Magnificent piece indeed!
Actually has perfect lines, no top lever to possibly snag your hand in recoil & there would be a fair old amount of that!

Very nice.
Elegant simplicity in design while maintaining full embellishment.
Jeffery doubles definitely strike the perfect balance between
form and function IMHO.
...if a .600 Nitro could ever be called a "working double"!

In the Cal Pappas book ".600 Nitro Express" on pages 79 to 87 and pages 185 to 188 he lists by individual Serial Number the 37 W.J. Jeffery Double Rifles in .600 N.E. made between 1901 and 1929.
23 were made by Daniel Leonard & Sons between 1903 and 1929 and 14 by John Saunders between 1901 and 1904.

In the Cal Pappas 2008 book ".600 Nitro Express" he identified 204 .600 N.E. rifles, a mix of Doubles & Singles (pages 182 to 193) made between 1900 and 2008. W.J.Jeffery made the most with 70 (37 Double Rifles & 33 Single Rifles between 1900 and 1929) and then Westley Richards with 28 and then Heym with 17 and Holland & Holland with 16.
Of the 204 .600 N.E. rifles; there were 104 made up to 1939 & 91 after 1939 to 2008 (with 9 Unknown dates).

Not too joyfull to carry all day either. But it is one of the most beautiful rifles I have seen, to my eye anyway. The stock fit is exceptional.

I guess one could be bedazzled when standing with the rifle in the hands he "bedazzle" himself to shoot it. After a few shots from each barrel the spell is over....:LOL

Its a lovely rifle and I would definatly shoot it if I owned it.

Plus our own CL's Purdey .600 NE, of very recent commission.

I see he commented.

CL, I thought you had a Jeffery .600 as well. Graham Williams was carrying it at the Darwin BGRC Nationals a few years back? Maybe it was an H&H? Blackish colour case hardening side plates from men ory?

At one time, in the 70's I think, Les Bauska of Kalispel, Montana had some oversized Ruger #1's cast up and he was building .577 & .600 NE'S. Does anyone here know of any in the hands of fellows today?
