The good weight ???

Isn't heavy the weight(4,76 kg/10 lbs 9oz) for a .416 Rigby (bolt action)without scope?
At soon.

Only a little IMO. I wouldn't want a Rigby .416 any lighter than 10 lbs, so 10 1/2 lbs would be OK for me. My 24-inch barrel Taylor weighs 10 lbs empty, and that's about right I reckon.

The extra weight of a scope is only a problem for those who don't enjoy open sights!

With the scope, the weight is (5,48kg/ 12 lbs 1 oz), I think that is enough for me because I have a good balance and not a bad recoil!

My rings and scope only add 11ozs to my rifle. They are Talley QD rings and a Luepold 1.5x5x20mm scope.

You could loose weight here if you want, more than 3/4lb. Your scope seems very heavy.

10 pounds is a good weight for a 416 bolt rifle without scope.
Mine is a couple of ounces short of 10 pounds.

My BRNOs m602 .358 Normal and .375H&H weighted 11.5lb. with scope - at that weight, they carried just fine, and kicked like a .243 - kinda.

The good weight. This is another perpetuated misconception that gets repeated and repeated and so on. Most every 416 Rigby off the rack is about 10 pounds so somehow this gets translated to a "good weight."

With a good-fitting stock, 8 lbs. is plenty, but you will have a difficult time finding one that light.

I'm old and lazy so I wanted a flyweight. So I went to the 416 Taylor. At 7 1/2 lbs. it is a pussycat to shoot. And it has the same ballistics as the Rigby.

But start anywhere you want. It is impossible to tell someone what is a good weight. It is all trial and error until YOU decide.

Will:
I don't think its terribly responsible to recommend 8lb as the ideal weight for Rigby's .416, or 7 1/2 lb as a 'pussycat' weight for the Taylor cartridge. Sure, you can have them built light, and good luck to you. However your contention that 10lbs for the Rigby is a "misconception" perpetuated by fools will not wash here. We own and shoot these things, remember! There is a good reason why "Most every 416 Rigby off the rack is about 10 pounds.." Hopefully, other posters here can toss up the weight of a few original Rigby rifles, which should help tell the story.

Plenty of heavy hitters have been lightened unreasonably by replacing their stocks with synthetics, and it makes them memorable to discharge, to say the least! A 10lb .416 is easy enough to carry all day as others have noted, so what's the problem?

I do agree with your closing statement of course:

I swapped the stock on my 375 with a plastic light weight stock just to see what the recoil was like.
Well 2 shots later I was reaching for the tool box and the heavy timber stock.
It was a big eye opener to me ,i couldnt believe the difference in felt recoil between the 2 stocks on the same rifle .
The same applies to my 416.

I am veryhappy. I do not intend to carry it to the top of the coast mountains after goat but into the river bottoms after moose! A far better and easier task.

Marrakai,

I suppose that I shouldn't have stated/implied that an 8 lb. Rigby is the "good weight," but shooting it offhand should not be that big a problem, assuming it has the right stock.

Actually my 416 Rem in a Mod. 70 I got down to 7.7 lbs. and it is just fine to shoot offhand.

I tried getting a CZ 550, converted to the 416 Rem, down to the same weight but it pitched up at 8.3 lbs. Offhand it is fine to shoot also. I tried to get McMillan to use a lightweight filler on their CZ stock for it but they chickened out. If they had it would have come in at about 7.5 lbs. too.

I never shoot any of them off the bench. A very bad practice! It comes with the limitations that I do not care how they "group" and I usually don't use a scope anymore. I can sight-in the rifles for 25 yards with open sights just shooting offhand. If the bullet winds up where I was aiming when it went off then it is sighted-in. If not, adjustments to the open sights are then made until it is "sighted-in."

But that's me. Like I said, everyone needs to decide for themselves.

There is a rough rule of thumb for rifle weight. You want about 2 pounds of weight for every thousand pounds of muzzel energy. Thus a 5000 foot pound rifle should be 10 pounds or more. I say this is a rough rule as a 4.5 pound 3006 would not be much fun but for the big energy rifles this "rule" works out rather well.

so i guess we could say the 416 rigby 24" barrel on my thompson encore is going to hurt a little.
