I'm searching for a beltless "short" medium bore cartridge for a bolt action rifle. The 9.3x64 and 9.3x62 is all I've been able to come up with.

The only ones I can think of is the 35 Whelan and 338-06 (which is effetively the 318 Westley Richards Accelerated Express.)
Hope this helps.

the short 404-based dakota series could be what you're looking for - depending on the caliber you want, they have necked it up to 423 and down to 7mm.

Bonanza,
35 Whelan doesn't set the world on fire but quite a few hunters here use it for Deer etc.
I have not shot it but have a deer hunting friend who uses it and he swears by it.
Not too sure of the longer range trajectory so you'd need to check it.

The new winchester short mag WSM325, may be an option. It's just an 8mm, but with a 250 gr bullet it should beat the 9.3x62 with the same bullet weight.
Also you can get it in the wincheter 70 featherweight, not a bad packing rilfe.

In reply to:
I've been looking at the .375 Dakota.
That's probably as good a one as any. And with the Rem Ultra cases in mass production, you'll always have cases from which to form it (should the dakota brass ever run short of supply.)

I'll suggest an oddball.
.400 Whelen, which I think is based on the .30/06 case necked to .40 calibre.

I have read that the 400 whelen has serious head spacing issues, but I've herd that about the 375 whelen as well.
If you want a 40 then I think the 40 caliber hawk/scovil is made from a blown out 9.3x62 cartridge and is suppose to head space OK.

It seems that a .400 Whelen should have some headspace issues given the small shoulder...however with a properly cut chamber it should be no worse than a .45 ACP or a .458 Winchester or a .41 or .44 AMP.
If the headspace problems exist with a properly cut .400 Whelen chamber, that would explain why it is extremely uncommon.
Personally I'd ignore the short cartridges and stick with a fairly common .375 H&H and just load it down a bit.
Richard.

Ever considered the 10,75x68 ? I´m just planning to build one. No problem in findig barrel, loaded cartridges or reasonable priced components for reloading. Energy is between 9,3x62 and 9,3x64 but fires a 350 - 400 grain bullet. (energy is not everything) You can even use a .404 rimless barrel and have some more bullets to choose from.

Bonanza Baised on my success with the 9,3x74R in my Chapuis Double, in a bolt rifle I would go with the 9,3x62.
Also for a low recoil "thumper" for 200 yard and in hunting a 10.75x68 would be a good choice. I have shot deer, pigs, black bear and caribou with my 450/400 double with excellent results.

Thanks a bunch guys. The more I have researched the 9.3x64 the more I like it. It's relatively short, no belt, and can be used to take any game in the world. Montana Rifleman makes a lefty control feed action that will work with it also.
