How do you hold hot barrels on a doubl?
      #31882 - 24/05/05 01:30 PM

I find that when the outdoor temp is over 100 degrees F., 4 shots through my double (right, left, right, left) makes the barrels too hot to hold. Since I have a splinter forened, not a beavertail, it is necessary for my fingers to contact the barresl. So my solution has been to use an unlined deerskin glove on my left hand. But wearing only one glove is a bit too much like Michael Jackson behavior for my preference.

500, after four shots you shouldn't have to touch the barrels again for a while, the Buffalo should be down for the count!

Kidding asside, I carry a small glove leather tube that just slips over the barrels, and slides up to the middle of the forend. The soft leather fits in my shirt pocket without bother, and also works while trailing, on the end of the barrels to keep your sweaty hand off the blacking at the muzzle, for the PH carry, in hot weather.

Glad to have you back. I was sorry to hear about your losses. I hope you have everything under control now.

I'm not yet a member of the double rifle club but on other weapons I've had to shoot with skimpy stocks I've worn an ordinary leather work glove; fortunately nobody mentioned any similarity to Michael Jackson.

Also I have seen some muzzleloader shooters wrap the forend and barrel/barrels with a piece of leather tied in place.

Richard.

Thanks Micky, It is about finished, maybe one more trip to Baton Rogue, and another to El Paso, and we will be through with both estates.
These two women were next door neighbors for years, and both pushing 86 year birthdays. for years they had lived 1100 miles apart, but kept in touch through my wife and I. My mother passed on the 1st of April, and while at her viewing, we recieved a cell phone call the my Mother-in-law had passed on the morning of the 5th of April.
The death of my mother was expected, but my M-I-L was as viable as a 50 yr old.
All this is a long way of saying death is as much a part of life as being born, and is a trip we all must make! Still it is disheartening when it takes those we love!

Thanks for the kind words Micky, and to others who may respond! I, and my family appreciate the sentiment!
Sorry, I didn't mean to hyjack the string! Back to hot barrels!
