Model 70 conversion to 458 Lott
      #30374 - 02/05/05 05:08 AM

I know that this has probably been covered in detail, but I am having a hard time finding posts on it.

Question is: How difficult/expensive is it to convert a Model 70 Safari Express in 458 Win Mag to 458 Lott?

Would this be the caliber to use in doing such a conversion in a Winchester Model 70?

Thank ya'll again...

Just did this conversion 6 months ago. The gunsmith just ran a Lott reamer into the chamber and touched up the rails a tiny bit. I think it cost me 90 bucks.

I know ya'll will be happy...

I finally took the plunge and bought a Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in 458 Win Mag. I hope it arrives within a couple of weeks.

I am now trying to pick out a scope for it and decide on what type of rings and mounts to get. Should I go with Leopold rings/bases or something different? I've read alot of posts on different scopes and it seems the consensus is to go with the M8 series Leopold in 2.5 power, RIGHT?

Should I go ahead and get the rifle punched out to 458 Lott? Is it "good" to shoot 458 Win's through it after getting it punched out or just "okay"? - what I'm asking is if it will damage the gun in any way in the long run.

Thank ya'll for all of the help.

Get it punched out. you'll have a lot more case capacity to work with vs. 458 win.

for rings an bases, i'd suggest talley or one of the more expensive EAW/Recknagel swing-off or claw-type mounts. (let your budget decide for you.) But I'd definitely reccomend the talleys over the leupolds.

I cant imagine that you could possibly shoot enough 458wins in your gun to do any damage. You can load up/down the lott to suit your taste (both below and above 458 win performance).

Personally, i wouldn't bother with any 458win ammo or components. Just know that it has the capability when somethings gone wrong and you've lost your lott ammo.

It shouldnt cost you more than $100 bucks. It works great with this rifle. Your gunsmith may need to do a little adjusting to the rails to get it to fee properly. I did a 450 Ackley out of this same rifle. If I had it to do over I would have done the Lott. Too diffucult to make the Ackley feed properly. Get it done and you will have no regrets.

If you're going to do that, Id consider replacing the ejector with a sproing steel one. I can't remember the name of the company that made the one I used but it definatly improves ejection.

Dennis Olson of Plains, Montana rebarreled my dad's old 70 in 30-06 to a period original Winchester 375 H&H barrel and did all the rail and magazine work. I also had him fit and refinish a stock for it that Ray Atkinson gave me a while back that was a bit rough...well maybe more than a bit... When the rifle came back it looked like it had just come out of the box new in 1949!

The rifle functions flawlessly, and I can't find fault with anything Dennis did. He could take that 458 Win and make it into a 458 Lott that would be absolutely reliable IMHO.
