DRGM 6.5x58r stalking rifle Walter Gerard scope
      #291782 - 11/12/16 06:20 AM

Many years ago I was cruising the aisles of a gun show looking for something different and interesting. I came across this little rifle and had to have it. I call it my "old man" rifle because when I am too old and feeble to carry anything else I will hopefully still be able to handle it's 5 pound weight.
It handles like a little wand. The barrel is a slim 28.5 inch octagon. Proofed 4th month 1920, it shows signs of use but is still tight and the bore is excellent with a .260 inch groove diameter. I don't think the rifle is particularly unusual but what is uncommon is that it still has its scope, a DRGM Walter Gerard in see through claw mounts.

The 6.5x58r Sauer is about the power of the old 25-35 and I have always wanted to take it deer hunting but am afraid I would run into an elk or bear for which it would be a bit on the light side. I shoot both cast and jacketed bullets.

Bertram brass is available but expensive. I understand that 9.3x72r brass can be reformed but I have not tried as it is not very available. 30-30 brass is too short. I plan to try some of the longer starline 38-55 brass sometime and see if it works better.

Lovely rifle Cordite!
Both of you might not be as young as you wish to be, but keep up your side of the bargain & both you & your 'old man' will still be going for a long time yet!
We have 2 old fellas (cousins in their 80's)that come to the club religiously once a week, they bring their old (well care for but travelled)rifles out & have a go.
Yes their eyes aren't so good anymore, they have a few breaks & a cuppa to recharge every now & then - but they have a great old time & really enjoy themselves!
I only hope I will be as good as them when I get to that age, (if I do) so keep up the good work matey; I think we'd all like to see you grass a good one in the future with the 'old man'

DRGM = Deutsches Reichgebrauchsmuster or German Patent, (pre 1945).

I think this model Sauer rifle was known as a "Tell". I have seen one in New Zealand in that same calibre.

Is the safety a back or forward to fire?

It's the standard forward to fire.
