Has anyone fired this round in a double rifle? Any comments on performance and recoil?

This is definatly a good performer in my opinion. More energy then either of the 450/400's and about the flattest shooting DGR for a DR around.

It is versitlie enough for plains game and components are easy to find. Recoil is stiffer then I would have thought. More in line with the 450's then the 400's.

I was mulling this same question over a few months ago. I decided to look around for an english boxlock in 450/400 3 or 3 1/4 first. If I can find a good one with a really long LOP in the next year I'll grab it. If not I'll probably order a searcy in 416/500.

The recoil from the 450/400 is very mild in comparison to the 416/500 and at open sight ranges it performs close enough that I don't think an animal could tell the difference.

Anyway that's my two cent's.

The 3 1/4 was once a black powder round. The 3 inch has always been a nitro round.

Actually, the 3 in will do everything the 3 1/4 will with a bit less pressure. Reloading the 3 is a lot easier than long necked 3 1/4. But hey, that's just my experience!

My personal opine here, the 450/400 3 inch is a prettier round than the 450/400 3 1/4. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly round!
Once again, just my opine!

I like that "impossibly long skinny neck" of the 450/400 3 1/4".
The rim on the 3" is quite a bit thicker/stronger, as are all the Jeffery designed cases.... Still I just love the look of the 3 1/4".

Either one of the 450/400's are probably the best choice for todays sport hunter. They are very effective and have less recoil than the 450/475 ctgs. The rifles are usually lighter too. My 400 3 1/4" weighs 9 1/4 lbs.

The .408 to .416 doubles have great sectional density and therefore great penetration, even if velocities are down around 2100 fps. My .450/.400 is a 3 1/4"... As with Rusty's anatomy, he seems to like shorter stuff than me!

E-mail me at properfistmele@hotmail.com and I can turn you onto a couple of really nice quality .450/.400's that I have seen and are for sale at a good price.

I suppose the 3" version is the better caliber, not much doubt about that, but were I looking for a 450-400 I would pick the better gun, as I have used, loaded, and hunted with both versions and if I were shopping it would make no difference which case it was, 3 or 3-1/4", if I liked the rifle.
