Nickel Scopes
      #228001 - 04/04/13 12:31 PM

Does anyone know anything about Nickel Scopes? How do they compare with other high end scopes such as Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender and Swarovski? The one I am looking for scope to use on a 375 H&H rifle. This is there website:
http://www.nickel-ag.com/en/products/scopes/15630.aspx

It has the same eye relief the the Swarovski Extended Eye Relief (4.9in) The question is the scope equal in optics and ruggedness to the Swarovski? Will it function as a dangerous game rifle scope?

Any comments

Don

I've not seen any of the new ones, but in the 50's and 60's they had a tremendous reputation. At least in NZ anyway.

Dad bought one in 1958 and put it on a featherweight 30/06, and shot several hundred deer with it. He gave it to me on my last trip down there. It has quite a dent in the eyepiece where he fell on it once. He swears he heard glass break, but it was still clear and held zero, so it was used for many more years. It has absolutely no finish left and is covered in scrapes, so I will have to find something fitting to mount it on.

Those Nickel scopes have a good quality, not so sure as good as Swarovski have but IMO better than eg. Zeiss Duralyt.

I've had 2 of the old Nickel scopes. They are great scopes. I'm afraid I have no experience with the new ones, however.

Very good scopes in the 50's and 60's as Mike has mentioned.

As for the new ones, I have heard from a friend on east coast who is putting a 1-4x25 on a M'03 375. I like the looks of this 1.5-6x30, a very sensible objective size. Should be able to mount fairly low.

A few years ago, I bought a couple of used Nickel scopes off eGun and had them sent back to the factory for rehab. These were lightweight scopes with rails which had been drilled to accept scope mounts. When I received them back, the holes had been plugged, they had been completely refinished, the reticles changed and the optics were perfect. I would not hesitate to use them again.

Don - I have just observed the one you are talking about
(Magnum 1.5-6x30 EDS) - it is mounted on my friend's Merkel K3 kipplaufbuchse in 9,3x74R. It sits there for a couple of years now - it was on a couple trips to Zim and still going perfect according to its master). Haven't heard about a single complaint about Nickel's so far.
I was rather surpirsed how slick classy and elegant this cope is - mounted realy low - perfect match for a kipplaufbuchse or small framed double - once you see it mounted in person all the other scopes look awkward. It also has that neat time frame look that (IMO) modern ones lack of. If I'd be looking for scope for my Merkel it would be among highest contenders.

Thanks for your reply. 500 Nitro I generally use Leupold as they are the best value for the money, by far. The advantage of a Swarovski 1X-6X EE is that it has constant eye relief of 4.9 inches. While the Leupold 1.5X-5X VXIII varies from 5.2 to 3.5 inches depending on the power. I have my Swarovski 1X-6X EE mounted on a Kimber Caprivi in 375 H&H Mag. I am look at purchasing a Dakota and the Nickel might offer something different.

Very sturdy scope of good quality but a little heavier than most. I prefer a little extra weight if it improves its strength.
I have always considered purchasing one in 4# or similar in variable as the price was good BUT I always went back to Schmidt&Bender.

I have a 4x 32 and a 6x 42 from the 60's at great prices ($200 to $500). The 4x courtesy of a poster here (Tophet?), thanks muchly mate! Both were refurbed some time ago.

First class and as a plus they match the older rifles I have.

I have a few of the Nickel Supra Marburg Germany scopes that I purchased from Jaeger gunsmithing who was the importer of them in the 80's and 90's I even have a couple older Nickels. These scopes are as good as you can get and I have hunted very hard with my Nickel scopes and never been let down.I have had a lot of German optiks in my life and I would rate these at or up to #1 .I cant tell you how many Kahles, Swarovski and Leupold scopes I have had leak or crap out .The Nickels have always been reliable along with my Zeiss'. As for the new ones I cant say but if they are made as good as mine but if they are made by the same people i would bet they are. Leupold ?....like looking through dishwater when compared to a quality German optik (To my eyes anyway)
