Cartridges for BIG5 and PG- presence in the shops Africa?
Hi.
I want to ask the question is not about the use of calibers BIG5 and PG
but
question:
"What cartridges are always available in the shops for African BIG5 and PG?"

375 H&H is readily available...
458 Win is also around most shops..from what I have found...

.470 N.E. and .416 Rem -is problematic?

Ironically when I was in Zim the last time..they had quite a bit of .416 Rem ammo sitting around..in that camp--3 ph's used the .416 Rem. as their guns of choice...

but have not seen that much .470 around..think probably one reason is its really expensive .

still think in general. you will find 375 and 458 more readily available..

All the Weatherby ammo includeing DG capable stuff, was available 4 years ago at the Powder Keg in Jo'Burg, plus some euro cals from Euro manufacturers eg Blaser 9.3x62 ammo.

One shop in Bloomfontein had all the common PG calibres.

Cape Town had very little. I suppose for some calibres you have to ask for what is not on display ?

Some of the big 5 are not all that big. A good deer calibre with lightly jacketed bullets are what is needed for a leopard. A 180 grain Remington Cor Loct or Hornady Interlock out of a 30-06 is all you need. Even the king of beasts would be better served with a bullet that mushrooms easily such as a 300 grain Hornady round nose Interlock out of a .375 H%H or Ruger than an excellent, but too tough a bullet such as a 300 grain A Frame from Swift. Keep the A Frames for cape buffalo. Cape buffalo, elephants and rhinos need stout bullets that can really penetrate. Solids for the elephant and the rhino only, and as a back up for cape buffalo.

You can find .375 belted in a lot of places, flanged NO, you´ll have to take your own, best

South Africa has most of the common ammunition available BUT as for the rest of Africa, you will likely need to get it from a hunter. Cartridges such as 9.3 x62, 375H&H, 416REM, 458 Win, 458LOTT, 470NE are likely available BUT at a price and some time.
