sling hooks
      #22218 - 14/12/04 12:57 PM

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know a source for English-style sling hooks? My old Jeffery double rifle was designed for them and modern sling swivels do not fit. Thanks, Keith

Afraid I really live in the Boonies, up in Montana in the USA. No buffalo, but bison, and with my old double I hunt mostly elk, moose and whitetail deer. Thanks for the help. any other suggestions? Keith

Sling hooks are an American item, not British. Those big eyes are for thongs to be tied on attached to your sling.

Last ones I got were from Dixie Gun Works in Tn. Seem to remember Cape Outfitters had them so the guy that took over for them may have them also. Don't remember his name though.

I have always wondered with this type of sling - what happens when the leather "string" wears out? Can it easily be replaced in the sling, or is it the case of buying a new one or repaired?

Nitro

A shoe repair store or saddlery can easily replace the thong.

The one on the sling.

I like them as there is no clinking of a swivel on the barrel or on the stock.

Thanks for all the info, guys. I am still learning in this wonderful world of double rifles. Since we're on this subject, what are your prefences for slings and swivels for double rifles? I realize some of you may not use them at all, but in the mountains where I hunt I sometimes need both hands for climbing or for ski poles when I hunt on snowshoes. If you do have specific choices, please let me know where I might find them commercially. Thanks again, Keith

Does anybody have the dimentions or full picture of one of these slings.
Length and width ect.
I know a retired saddler that would probably make one or two on request..
Thanks in advance.

NitroX it is quite simple to change the thong on those slings, The leather thong is simply threaded through the tube formed at each end of the sling, then tying a knot in the end, so it will not pull through. are held in by the knot in the end of the thong, and slideing the sharp end through the tubular section of the sling. They are not sewn into the sling.

ALAN_MCKENZIE,

If there is one thing I am crazy about, it is photographing guns.

At your request, here is a shot of an original sling, with the very nice hook, all from 1891 and originating with my James Woodward & Sons .450/400 3.25" Nitro Express double rifle. All of this resides in its original oak & leather case. The Woodward lies in the background!

This one has a spring-loaded catch, much like the fastener on a lady's necklace. It is unlike the hooks now available from Jeff's Outfitters.

I beg to differ with Mickey. Sling hooks and eyes are very much an English amenity. I don't think of them being American at all.

For dimensions, the sling is one inch wide.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject. "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Best regards,

CptCurl

NitroX,

Yeah, I just notice that. I was posting as you split it and landed on the wrong thread! Had to delete the post and put it on the new thread.

Good work, NitroX,

Curl

both types of sling attachement figured heavily in the late 1890's and early part of the 1900's here in England, the hook type was preferred from the target shooting fraternity who used fixed slings attahced to shooting jackets and who, once i nthe prone position could snap the hook onto the sling for stability.

The sling with the pig-skin thong end was a type preferred by hunters as it gave an almost silent fix as there was no metal to metal contact that went with the hook set up.

Many old Rigbys were supplied i n the early 1900's with the thong sling and so much interest was shown in their continued use, that in the mid 1990's, Paul Robert's, the then owner of Rigbys had a faithful copy of an early 1900's thong ended sling made for sale by Rigbys.

Although no longer connected with the Rigby name, J. Roberts and sons Gunmakers in Vauxhall London continue to offer this sling, it is adjustable by way of a leather covered buckle and has a suede back on the shoulder area, the same sling is also offered with buckle ends to fit fixed 1 inch sling loops, I am certain it can be viewed on their (J Roberts and Sons) website under accessories.

Just took a look at the Roberts website, but there's no detailed photo of the sling offerings.

Does he offer a sling with the clasp attachment like on my Woodward? It would be good to know, as many of us have rifles with sling eyes.

You are correct, whilst both versions of the sling are pictured, the pictures are small and lacking in detail.

I have both the thong end and buckle ended versions, both are extremely well made and both versions cost £35 sterling. The buckle ended one has a leather coverings finely stitched around the buckles just like the hook appears to have for your Woodward.

I guess it would be posssible to order the buckle ended version then fit to it the clasp hooks as in your picture, these can be bought in hardware stores or even taken from large dog leads, of course they would be chromed or nickel finish unless you could find someone locally who could fine stitch aleather covering over the clasp.

Sadly have not seen any slings offered here with the exact hook clasp that your picture shows.

I like the thong end version myself as they are totally silent although they can be a little difficult to untie and remove, especially if the leather becomes wet.
