the steel is maybe fine, you can use it to mill barrels from it

G'Day Fella's,

Like WOW!!!
I would just love to see the Lathe that these barrels were machined on and also the rifling machines as well!!!

Thank You R Scott, for bringing these images to our attention!

I would also like to see how they make them, as well as how they make the engine parts for those monster ships! Very cool bits of metal...

An interesting post, thank you.

Too bad, those could not or were not donated to local VFW branches (or others) for yard art. Condition of sale is they must be de-milled. WWII 16 inch guns, real piece of history there. They would look good out on the grounds of some of the Naval Museums, for instance Fall River MA with USS Mass:

Here are a few links you can follow up on, first is Practical machinist, where I spend a lot of time:

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/gunsmithing/cannon-making-lathes-big-ones-174974/

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/ant...wash-dc-114825/

If you join up and ask, you probably see more photo and discussion. I have some pictures too, but would have to scan and then this forum will not host the pics. But the above PM, will host the image.

There is a lot of cross over interest, guys who like guns, like machines and tools all part of the same fascination for many.

Two images of boring & turning:

I don't have any idea where the last post I started ended up. If it double taps please excuse me.

What I was wondering... in that third from the last photo that FourBore put up it looks like a very refined version of the rifling method from the Foxfire books. Second lathe up from the bottom, tool approach from the right. Looks like a defined rifling rate guide groove on the tool carrier.

As a machinist, big equipment, precision turbine millwright, powder burning, gun nut kind of guy this stuff just snaps the elastic in my socks. Kind of feeds my need for a bronze barreled rifled Parrot gun if ya know what I mean. (nudge nudge wink wink)

Good job putting these photos up man!

Bret
