A buddy of mine was recently looking through a bunch of old firearms thet had been confiscated by the Botswana Game Department and found an old hammer double rifle. To cut a long story short, the lucky sod bought it for 600 Pula (about US$40-45).......... but he doesn't know anything about it, and has asked me for help.
So if anyone can shed any light on the history, or any other aspect of the following, we would both be grateful.
It's marked:
E. Chamberlain late of Gibbs Worth Bristol E. Chamberlain maker Andover 5024 43C 7 450

If he posts it to me I will make sure it is insured for the $45 just in case it gets "lost in transit".
I think I can guess what it is, but someone who knows what they are talking about can chime in.

This was on the Internet Gun Club website:
Edward Chamberlain was established in 1889 at 1 Bridge Street, Andover. In about 1907 a branch appears to have been opened at 27a Wote Street, Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Edward appears to have retired or died in about 1910, the name changed both in Andover and Basingstoke to Edwin Chamberlain (son?) in 1911.
From some date after the First World War the firm was named B Chamberlain.
The Basingstoke branch closed in about 1926, the Andover business closed after 1939. Other Info The firm sold cartridges under the names "The Smokeless" and "The Universal".
Doesn't say anything about George Gibbs in Bristol but he probably worked for them before going out on his own.
Nice find - probably in 450 BPE - the "magnum" of the day.

Thanks for the history. I'll pass it onto him. Would you know if anyone still has the company records by any chance?
