Does anyone have a clue as to what this rifle might be? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=184125228
It appears to be a Dutch or Romanian Mannlicher which has been altered to utilize a different sort of magazine, one not requiring the use of an en bloc clip, with a hinged floorplate and a unique floorplate release.

During WW2 the Germans used a Mannlicher hybrid made in Hungary ,can't think of the model designation ,it was basically a Hungarian Mannlicher with the Mauser type magazine in 8x57 of course, production code JHV ,there were a few more mods but that was the major one .It may have been one of those.

This is a Haenel Mod. 1909, but restocked, bolt handle altered and fitted with the terrible Redfield mounts.
Haenel made many M88 comission rifles and carbines for the German army up to 1898. They also made several grades of sporting rifles on M88 actions. Being without German military orders after 1898, they tried to modernize the 88 action by adding a staggered collumn mag with their own patented follower, a gas flange on the bolt and thus compete with the M98 Mauser. In 1909 they streamlined the action somewhat. In the end they could not compete with Mauser or Mannlicher-Schoenauer, so WWI put an end to production. The late Lud Olson once called them "rarer than hen's teeth".

On top is my 8x57I Haenel M1900, high #9 grade, below my 9x57 M1909 #5 utility grade.
My M1909 again. Xausa, only a few weeks ago you had this rifle in your own hands!

Yes, now I remember. You have to take into consideration how overloaded my poor memory banks were at the time after taking in your collection and that of your gunsmith friend. I'm surprised I remember anything.
Why is the lower illustration reversed, or is that the super rare left handed model?

This is not a Suhl or Haenel stock. It may have been stocked by Mahrholdt-Peterlongo in Innsbruck, Austria. That company apparently bought up several "left over" barreled actions in Suhl in the 1930s, stocked and finished them and sold them as their own product. Here is a photo of a Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl M21 action in 5.6x52R aka .22 Savage HP, completed, marked and sold by them in 1941 (Ferlach proof 9/41)

hope not to highjacking this but do you have a clue which system Burgsmüller here offer as Modell 6455 in the 1926 catalog?

REMO - Gebrueder Rempt, Suhl. Another less successful Suhl design from the 1920s to compete with Mauser and Steyr.

thank you for clear this up, seems to be one of the earliest "big bore" bolt action hunting rifle's without a military connection.
