Cross Bolt on a Pre 64 .375 H&H?
      #163695 - 09/07/10 12:43 AM

I was having trouble dialing in my pre-64 .375H&H for an upcoming trip to Zambia. I ran it by the gun smith and he found a few cracks in the stock under the action. Those are being attended too. he also sugested that I insert a cross bolt. The gun was custom made for the gent who had it before me without a cross bolt. Any thoughts?

I'm no expert but would suggest the cross bolt would be a good idea. I understand that a repaired crack will be okay but then there is a possibility that the adjacent timber may crack over time instead. I guess that you may be concerned about any affect on the rifle's value as a result of installing a cross bolt. If it's done well then I don't think it would make a significant difference.

Either way, I expect there to be a chance of future cracking and the choices would be cross-bolt or another (new) stock.

You could also consider an epoxied "hidden" type cross bolt like Jack Lott used on some of his big bore rifles.
Nothing visible from the outside.

Yes I would, if it were my rifle.
I install them on my big guns. Some 375s don't need them, but it NEVER hurts anything to have them.
