Dorleac 500 Jeffery Completed Recently
      #161970 - 12/06/10 11:50 AM

I have pictures here of a recently commissioned and completed 500 Jeffery rifle by the Dorleac firm. The details that I have are:

Hi Mehul,

Some photos of a recently finished .500 Jeffery rimless we have built on a much-modified Waffen Prechtl Magnum Mauser action.
We have selected a Heym blank for the 25" barrel and the stock is made of true French walnut.
The special high capacity magazine floorplate was machined in house because the one that Golmatic could furnish was too heavy and didn't permit obtaining a full capacity with the fat Jeffery cartridge.
The rifle was treated in our classic style and the client chooses to have it engraved to the Rhinoceros glory.
Notice that the scrolls end in the form of jujube tree spines with the fruits inlaid in two colors of gold.
Hope this will be of interest for you and the Big bore Forum !

Best friendly regards.

Joel Dorleac

Hope you enjoy the pictures and happy viewing and good hunting!

Triple WOW. Very nice. Not sure I really like that style of floorplate, but I am sure I would warm to it if charged by something very large with the same intent to me as me to him!

Thanks for sharing with us. Are they your intitials on the rifle?

Cheers, CHris

Very, very nice rifle. I prefer a regular drop magazine, but would love to own and hunt with this rifle non-the-less.

That is real class and although generally not a fan of dropped magazines this one I really like, it complements the actions and has nice lines.

Just some observations on a couple of things which do surprise me a little:

Every screw and cross bolt head is timed but not the rear sight screw which is a shame but easily fixed?

Pity the name could not have been the traditional .500 Jeffery Rimless? Could have had Nitro Express included but not Magnum. I don't think the .500 Jeffery was ever known as a Magnum whereas the 505 Gibbs did carry this designation.

The front flip up 'night' sight is really nice but is very vulnerable? I would not like to put the rifle up in a charge situation to see that night sight having been flipped half up by a bit of brush. Needs protection.

Hate to spoil the party but these things immediately came to mind when looking at the photos.

The Dorleac workmanship is beautiful. Personally I like the idea of a deep single stack magazine for the .500 Jeff.

G'Day Fella's,

This is another stunning example of European craftsmanship, at it's best!

Not much more can be said that hasn't already!
But here's my try.
Not all works of art are on canvas and surrounded by a frame!

Thank You Mehulkamdar, for bringing this to our attention!!!

I have a reply from M Dorleac to the points raised by Eagle 27:

Hi Mehul,

Some info to reply at the accurate eyes of Eagle27.
Of course, the rear sight set screw is now perfectly indexed; when that part of the rifle was photographed the client hasn't yet shot the big one; after the sights have been regulated to his eyes, the screw has been properly indexed.
We don't take great care to perfectly time all the screws head to forget that easy one!
Also, notice that the combination front sight is not as fragile as it could appear. We have a lot of working rifles bearing the same type of front sight, and to date we have not encountered a single trouble with them, even in dense Cameroon forest hunting elephants.
About the .500 JEFFERY MAGNUM RIMLESS marking, I agree with him, but as our customer wanted the "Magnum" spelling…we made our best in hand engraving his dream on the barrel in the best way we could.

Best regards.

RockDoc,

No, those are not my initials on the rifle. I do wish that they were, though, but so do a lot of other people.

Gryphon,

I have no idea about the price and I didn't ask. Might not shock you, but it will me . . .

Hommer,

My pleasure! I know that the NE forums have more people interested in fine guns than any other forum. That is why I keep pestering people for pictures and information. I try not to be a persistent pain in the butt, but I suspect that some people whom I keep pestering for pics consider me one.

It is those who share pictures of their treasures who need to be thanked. I am like the mailman who delivers packages, nothing more.

Good hunting, everyone!

Joel

A pleasure to have your reply to my eagle eye. Glad to hear all is sorted. I do apologise for detracting from the beutiful work of art but just had to ask all the same. As I said in my post I tend to like flush magazines but the one you have produced for this rifle is a pleasure to look at as is every other part of the rifle. I'm sure the owner will take comfort from having a good few cartridges on hand.

Great choice of old world traditional rifle and cartridge and I hope the new owner lets it see the light of day in Africa to complete the tradition.

G'Day Fella's,

No problems Mehulkamdar, it doesn't matter what they think of you, we reckon "You Are Fantastic" and that is all that matters!!!

I'm not trying to out do old Eagle Eye 27 but is the front cross bolt located further back toward the magazine on this rifle, than is usual?
