416 Ruger Loads
      #161761 - 09/06/10 07:09 PM

I'm having a 416 Ruger made at the moment, mainly for something to play with and compare to my 416 Taylor.
I'm wondering if there are other people out there that have had a spot of trouble in getting hold of reloading data for the 416 Ruger. I have a page of data courtesy of Hornady, which they responded to my request very quickly indeed.

What I'm asking is if anyone has played with one much yet, and what powders you have found work well in it. I'm thinking along the lines of 400/410 grain Woodleighs mainly. I will play with some cast bullets at a later date as well.

Looking forward to anyone's comments and thoughts.

Hmm - the .375 Ruger has about a 6gr. advantage over the H&H case, so the .416 Ruger might have a 2 to 4gr. capacity advantage over the .416Rem. due to the Rem's. less taper than in .375 cal.
What are the proposed ballistics? I am unaware of the new Ruger round.

Daryl,
I believe the 416 Ruger to be about in between the Taylor and the Rem Mag (approximately). My thoughts were to start on Taylor loading data and go from there. Basically it is a beltless Taylor, about 70 thou longer with less taper.
I'm thinking AR 2208 (Varget) and RL-15 would be good starting points.
Just wondering who else might be handloading for one at the moment.

Mate of mine is. Rechambered a 416Taylor built on a Howa to 416Ruger. He's using 340gr Woodleigh's for Sambar. You should be able to start with near top 416Taylor loads and increase gradually. Very hazy memory tells me he found about a 5gr increase when he went Taylor to Ruger.
Cheers..

Con,
Thanks a lot for the info, confirms what I had expected, I have a Taylor as well, so I'll be able to compare both side by side, they will have the same make of barrel and same length, should be a good comparison.
I'm going to start with AR 2208 or RL 15 and see what happens. I'll be shooting 400 or 410 Woodleighs, as for the Big Game events here I need a minimum bullet weight of 400 grains for Group 2 NE.

Will post some results when it all comes together.

Specific data is not needed. This is good information, of course. Nothing like experience and a little common sense.

Well, I just got back from the range where I was playing with my brand new Ruger Hawkeye .416 with the overmold stock and stainless everything else.

Couple of points regarding loads.
1. Hornady makes a DG 400-gr. soft and solid.
2. Both shoot to the same point of aim at 50 yards.
3. The iron sights on the Ruger are set to 50 yards.
4. A Leupold VX-II 1-4x20 is awaiting installation.
5. 400-gr. at 2520 fps out of a 20 inch barrel is LOUD.
6. Kicks like a rabid mule; I don't care what other gun writers say. (Yup, I'm one - Dangerous Game Hunting Magazine, Small
Arms Review, and others)
7. I've taken up to Cape Buffalo with a .416. (Remington). Anyone who thinks he/she has a need for more zap out the loud end of
the barrel needs to be on the rubber end a few times. I've owned/shot up to a .Searcy .700 Nitro. My last Buf fell to a .458
Lott. I have faith that one of these days my shoulder will quit hurting, and the ugly red lines go away.
8. And lastly ... anyone who says you don't feel the recoil when you tap off a .400, or larger, caliber at an animal ... ummm,
dunno 'bout that. I'm good for 2-3 shots offhand these days; at the most, two from the bench, and hopefully only one when
hunting - they all hurt like hell.

I guess what I'm sayin' is go with the Hornady load, it will do anything anyone could want anywhere anytime on any animal.

I am reloading with woodleigh 340gr projectiles pushed by 82 grs AR2208 powder. This is a safe load in my rifle and very accurate for 416 calibre. This is a mild load. Most reload info I have used has been based on the 416 rem data.

Con! Yabbie used my 416 at the bb shoot recently you would know how it shoots.

In all my reloading for the .416 I am usually running around 2450 give or take a bit using 400 gr bullets..

I am going to contact Hornady next week and see what information they can offer. They helped greatly when I started loading for the .375 ruger. I just got my Alaskan in .416 ruger last week and love it. It has a much better recoil pad than my African .375 ruger model. I cant wait to see the African model in the .416 ruger. I got my dies in and will be loading soon. I will keep you posted as to my results. Good hunting...

Firstly, Thanks to Blank for the link above.

Secondly, Bigmaxx, the link that Blank has posted is a copy of the load notes straight from Hornady.
The page has a fair amount of information which I'm sure will be in the next Hornady manual, whenever that might be.
Interestingly, I contacted our own ADI at the same time and I'm yet to receive a reply from them, but Hornady sent it to me as well within hours.
