Merkel 140 scope bases
      #154477 - 22/02/10 05:12 PM

I note that the 140 comes with integral scope bases, the forward I'm assuming is for a swivel QD, the rear is a dovetail. Is that correct? I'm just going by the pics in the catalogue.

Apart from sending a scope to Germany to have rings fitted/made to suit this system, is there another way to source rings?

This is what I mean.......

Hi 9.3,

What does the supplier say, I suggest that you look at the following site: www.recknagel.de but download their catalogue it is easier that way and you have it for later.

Cheers for now,

Hi 9.3,

The easy way is to contact Graeme Spraggon, he is the Australia agents. Email: graemesp@bigpond.com

Cheers,

Thanks Jeff,

Very useful info.

It looks like it may be a swing mount, that catalogue mentions Merkels but only the SR-1.

I'll email Graeme.

Btw, it seems a set of rings would have added about 18% to the price of the rifle. Which I reckon is a lot.

MAK? OK thanks, more to research.

Here's another pic I found of someone else's and it was described as a Recknagel....

Hi 9.3,

Your most welcome, Recknagel or EAW are the German manufacturers for German rifles. I thought that a MAK was either a burger or a truck.... just joking, quality breed quality in my humble opinion, Graeme Spraggon can normally have them delivered in 3-4 weeks.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

The Recknagel distributor, Graeme, has been very helpful, and the price estimate seems reasonable.

I must say I am a little suprised by the response from the Oz Merkel distributor, Garnet. I asked for two measurements, the distance between bases and the width of the rear base. This is what I got back.....

Quote:

"Scope mounts for doubles and drillings are a problem if not ordered with the
rifle from the factory. We will only get involved with mounts if the scope
is supplied by the purchaser and the mounts and scope are fitted and zeroed
by Merkel."

"This no doubt seems over the top but with over 30 years in the firearms
industry the one thing we have learnt is that getting the correct mounts for
a double or drilling is not as simple as it first appears. Often the mounts
that are ordered are not the correct ones when it comes to fitting up the
scope due to the relationship between rings, bases and scope eye relief . We
can not return rings to Merkel should they be incorrect."

"May I suggest that you hold off until you get your rifle and have a chance
to consider the relationship between rings, bases and scope eye relief
before doing anything. In addition the rifle is designed and set up for
50-75m, a scope will not be much of any advantage at these ranges."

Over the top? What do you reckon?

I think he underestimates his product and the intelligence of his customers with this dribble. His estimate of the cost of rings was also four times that of Graeme's. I am quite capable of reading measurements using a caliper and rule and doing some very basic calculations. And how is the factory going to know how my eye fits the rifle and where I would like it mounted if I'm not there too?? Ahhhh, maybe the price includes the return airfare for me to go with it to Germany for the fitting. That would explain a lot.

I'm not sure how to respond to him..... I wonder if I should contact Merkel in Germany for some advice?

In the meantime, everyone with a Merkel in 9.3x74R, be warned that your rifle is useless beyond 75 metres.

BTW, the two measurements I'm looking for are...

1. The distance between the centres of the front and rear mounts.

2. The width of the rear mount. It should be one of 12, 13, 14, or 15mm.

Is there anyone out there with a recent 140E that could measure those for me?

Thanks.

If it was me, i'd be sending it to JJ with your scope, and have him put claw mounts on it. That's where my DR is now, as i hated the swing mount that was on it.

I know some here like those swing mounts, but with having claw mounts on my other gun, i just can't stand being stuck with the swing mount.

Garnet quoted me something like $1500 to have my scope mounted on a 141 Merkel which is ridiculous. Had I ordered the rifle, I'd have ordered it without the mounts and then sourced them myself afterwards, mounted the scope and then either regulate via load development or by useing the 141's adjustable muzzle wedge.

Cheers.

Ahh, i missed that part, and of course it changes things... I wonder if there's a place more available to him that could put claw mounts of that rifle?

BTW, for those that like swing mounts, here's a pict of my Chapuis with a swing mount,
