What to spot on doublerifle
      #153509 - 13/02/10 08:43 AM

Westley Richards has this .470 up for sale..

http://www.gunsinternational.com/popup.cfm?id=100115504&num=5&pic=100115504-5-L.jpg

IN the picture I see the dollshead in the action, seems rather worn. There a gaps + rounded egdes.
That is an indication for me, that a gun like that has seen a lot of use.
My own 10bore dr is tight around that areas it can become.

Do you all too look at those things..besides everything else??..

Yes, very much so.

Engraving (worn engraving in certain areas) is also a good giveaway, then match it up with the bores and you can see whether it was a gun carried alot but not shot much or carried and used a lot.

Could also suggest a re-joint or re-hook. This can some times alter the precise fit at the dolls head which may require some smithing to make it work. If not done right it can leave visible gaps etc.

..regarding the engraving..Look at this one:

I have seen the pictures of the barrels of this Manton..The chambers are very pitted.
The seller wants Eu$ 4900,00. Personally I wouldn`t not buy such a gun...regardless of price.
It`s a "beginners gun"...
It also looks like someone has tried to "create" a "flameblue" coloring on the frame.
