Searcy Field Grade DR model being discontinued
      #147712 - 12/12/09 12:59 PM

Get 'em while you still can. I ordered mine back in October.

Searcy's web site has changed. Field Grade model being discontinued and the tab for the deluxe is gone.

http://www.searcyent.com/field_grade1.htm

The site says, "Due to all the cheap double rifles being imported, on January 1, 2010 the Field Grade will no longer be available".

After the first of the year, it will be 18K and up for a classic or 25K and up for a sidelock. I don't know what the new "Rigby rising bite" ones will cost.

Cheap double rifles ? are these just the Sabatti ? or are there others ? i still cant see why this model should be discontinued ,doesnt make any sense to me .Cheap doesnt mean quality does it? id rather pay more for something and know it was good and backed up by its maker .

500Boswell,

On the AR forum, a poster asked something similar.

http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/760101804/m/5591071221

"Most likely the reasons for dropping the low end model is 1. he does not choose to lower his standards/quality/features to compete or 2. he is simply not able to compete with those he refers to as "cheap" due to overhead, production costs, profit margins, etc.
I realize and appreciate the high regard many have for Searcy products, but personally believe his use of the word cheap in his announcement is a poor choice of words. I would venture that many owners of double rifles costing something less than 15-$20,000.00 do not consider them cheap and hold their rifles in high regard as well. Current owner/buyers of H&H, Purdey, Boss, Rigby's, etc. most likely consider the Searcy's as "cheap" or perhaps even crude in comparison. They are made in one of the "colonies" you know!!
Again, I have heard nothing but good things about a Searcy double but have heard equally good things for "less expensive" doubles as well."

Butch replied,

"I agree with you 100%. Poor choice of words. Actually my average rifle order is for the much higher grade rifles, in fact I have more Sidelocks on order than any of the others. The Field Grade just doesn't have enough profit to continue it's production.
The proto type rising bite action is finished, and now I'm working on a 470 and 450 for the SCI convention. The 450 is for a customer."

Concerning, "The proto type rising bite action is finished", there has been a mention of such an action becoming available for some time on Butch's website. Recently, a few photos of a semi-finished action were posted at, http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/...1121#8271071121 by a member of the AR forum. The finished rifle is to be displayed at the SCI show in January.

Look forward to viewing that rising bite in Reno--

Cheap was probably an incorrect word to use--but relatively speaking, compared to the other Best Guns prices out there--it is accurate..not speaking ill of them in regards to quality or type, merely price...

As I stated before, the cheap Sabatti's will effect existing doubles. Your seeing a direct result of it with Searcy.

The only hope I think, is that Sabatti is operating at a loss, and eventually will go under. There is just no way I can figure out how they can build these guns with any reasonable amount of quality and make a profit.

I am so surprised that the photos didn't generate more comment.

It didn't even get to one page.

Heated to soften (annealed) for bending I suppose, they are straight when made.
