I have had some very encouraging communication with Signore Marco Rigido, the designer of the 750 Nitroexpress and other guns and I shall post the information here along with some pictures that he has sent me. Dan,

I have no problem with admitting that heavy recoiling rifles intimidate me. That said, I am also happy to admire those who shoot and hunt with them - and I know that you have hunted with some of the worst kickers ever made.

My hat's off to whoever has gained the strength to shoot and hunt with these huge guns!

BTW Signore Rigido has a much more powerful rifle in his 1" bore but that is only offered as a bolt action. I have posted a pic and details on the Big Bore forum.

Very impressive caliber, but, considering the bullet diameter and the painfully slow velocity, I'm betting this will have very poor penetration, especially on the pachyderms.

yep as i said a 12 gauge from hell, it should penetrate well enough, but i agree the recoil will be significant, it really shows that there is one for everybody

There is nothing new under the sun. About twenty years ago I visited a gunmaker in Rehobeth, Massachussetts, named Lou Alessandri who was building custom double rifles in his own patent .750 nitro chambering. I have no idea what ever became of Lou or his project.

Really just a modern bore gun, nothing wrong with that. I wonder what the load is. I would guess something like 200 grains of H1000 or RL25. I would think it might have ignition issues.

You are right.

Quite a few years ago I was at the Antique Arms Show in Las Vegas. Holland & Holland had a prominent setup, with one of their .700 Nitro Express doubles as the centerpiece. They were gracious to let me handle it. I asked the attendant why they didn't just make the rifles as a 12 bore Nitro Express. He looked at me as though a light had just come on and replied, "I don't know."

Could be they didn't want some idiot slipping one of the new NE rounds into an antique 12 bore rifle and letting go. But interchangeability of NE and BP rounds didn't bother them 115 years ago. They did exercise a little caution, though. Here's the rib inscription under the forend of my Purdey .500 BPE (made in 1894 after the advent of smokless):

Correct, nothing is new, in 1993 I was sitting in Randy Brooks' office and he showed me a 750 cartridge he was making to fit a 750 Double Rifle. Randy then owned the Apex Barrel Company, cut rifled style, and made the barrels for the gun in the Apex shop. After load development on a single shot test gun, the barrels and cartridges were shipped off to Italy to be turned into a double.

Probably going to some Arab prince.

I read that some oil rich Arab just ordered an A380 for as his private aircraft.

I bet the space station will be sold to some Arab.

11 bore Nitro - guess that should work. As to penetration, that would depend on bullet composition and design. 2,100fps is plenty as English (& American) ctgs. have shown now for over 100 years.
