Where to buy RL15 in OZ?????
      #14178 - 01/05/04 07:49 AM

Have tried Horsley Park, Rebel, Qld Gun Exchange, O'reilly's, Tobler and Kevin Grinter with no luck so far. Just wondering if any of the Aussies here would know where I can get some?

Hopefully Butch will be posting the .470 double I won on Accurate Reloading soon and I wanted to make up some of the loads which duplicate Fed factory loads.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

GG

Are you sure you can't try and duplicate the Federal load with ADI powders? It seems to me that would be the way to go since those powders are locally made. I think one of the DownUnders posted a 470 load using ADI powders. I suggest you do a search for it since I can't remember where I've seen it. I've got CRS, you know.

Graeme Wright lists several .470NE loads in his book SHOOTING THE BRITISH DOUBLE RIFLE using AR2213 and AR2214 powders. His loads range between 103 grs. and 121 grs. I would suspect that these loads would give considerably more "felt recoil" than comparable RL15 loadings utilizing the typical 87-89grs. with this powder.

The lower recoil and the fact that load development would be minimised are the main reasons I'm keen to duplicate the Fed loads. I'm fairly certain Butch will regulate my rifle using factory Fed loads and if I can reload to fed specs I can just head out hunting

GG375 - Unfortunately Hercules powders are not available in OZ. Some ADI powders are sold in the States, possibly as Hercules Powders. I don't think Reloader 15 is one of them though

Check with ADI.

Again, in Graeme Wright's book he includes a burning rate table. Although this chart is only an approximation,it shows AR2209 to be just a tad slower than RL15 in burning rate. Seems to be just about equal with IMR4350/H4350. Don't have any load info. Maybe someone else can jump in here.

I'm sorry, but right after my last post I went to the reloading section of this forum and there is a post using AR2209, 99grs. Hope this helps.

OK thanks guys - looks like I'll be using one of the ADI powders. When you speak of loads using 2213 is that the older version or 2213SC? Also what do you use as filler and where can I get my grubby little hands on some?

Thanks for all your info.

GG375,
Might be worth trying Shooters Warehouse in the ACT for Alliant [formerly Hercules] RL-15. They keep a few US powders. Contact details are at http://www.shooters.com.au/

Failing that, the Oz Alliant distributor comes up as Wesfire in WA, http://www.q-net.net.au/~wesfire/ They have a list of retailers, though you may have to wait a while for a single can order!

For ADI powders, they list loads for AR2209, 2213, 2213SC and 2217 in their manual. Check the ADI website, if you don't have a print copy.
Cheers,
Doug
