Hunting story..
      #14124 - 29/04/04 11:11 PM

Gentlemen:
Finally got around to tossing up a story about a 2-day trip with the missus last dry season. This is what happens when its still too wet to get out bush, I get bored and hit the key-board. Hope it starts to dry out soon!

Enjoy!

What a wonderful story. You know you could carry the video camera yourself if you didn't have to carry 5 pounds of ammunition.

Koool! If I ever win the lottery, I'm coming down there and wack a bunch of critters. Of course, I's just have to spend about a month and a half to meet up with the down-under members. You can't just meet up with somebody, you have to try to drink up all his beer and booze. Oh, how about the BBQ's, huh?

Marrakai

What a great trip. Are the pigs feral and considered pests with no bag limits or closed season? What about the buffalo? I know the point of your trip was not to fill the freezer, however do you take any of the meat home or cook the tenderloin out on the trail? One last question: Are all pig hunting trips that successful? It sounds pretty addictive.

Adam:
Feral pigs are shot commercially for human consumption in Australia, though almost all the meat is exported, mainly to Europe. They do however carry a number of very nasty parasites and diseases of humans, so without a proper meat inspection there is some risk involved in eating this animal, especially in the tropics.

There is certainly no closed season! They are a significant environmental pest and cause considerable damage to our primary industries. They are regularly shot to waste from helicopters at the tax-payers expense.

Buffalo are a bit safer to eat, so long as you know how to conduct a field-inspection for TB. If we do take buff meat, it spends a minimum of 2 weeks at -20 Celcius before preparing it for the table.

Most hunts in Australia's Top End are successful, I would say the one described is typical. I can't remember a hunt where I missed out, unless it was taking someone else out specifically to get them a shot. I may have posted this story before, but here's a fairly typical day-trip:

Ah I missed that post.

Marrakai taking the wife and .577 for a walk.

"a couple of fat cartridges were plonked into the Greener's breech "

What a beautiful sound.

"and then swung with the largest of the fast-departing animals which performed a clumsy somersault as the heavy double bucked upward for the second time in as many seconds. "

"What a tumbler" as Achilles says in the Illiad.
