Correctly cleaning a firearms bore?
      #132674 - 18/04/09 09:58 AM

G'Day Fella's

I have tried on a number of occasions, to post a comprehensive way to clean barrel bores, without any luck!!! I just wanted to pass on my experiences, both good and BAD.
As a .224 member am I restricted to a maximum amount of words or am I doing something wrong???

You are not restricted--wonder if you may be hitting "quick reply"...

Hit reply instead---and type to your hearts content...

Hello Hommer,

I have had the reply page time out a few times before, so here is a little trick that has helped me if I think a post is going to be a longish one. Do your post first in something like a word document. When you are done (it's all spell checked then too) just copy and paste it in the open reply box. Then you can add any pictures in the appropriate places.

Hope this helps

Regards

Alex

You can put the pictures in the MS Word document too. Just type [image] with the link here [/image].

If you want your barrels as clean as can be use a product called Wipe-Out. It comes as a foam cleaner or as a liquid. An accelerator is also sold than supposedly doubles the speed of the product. It is not cheap, but no other product cleans like this stuff. After letting the stuff sit in the barrel a day or two. Wipe it out. Your bore will be as clean as it was when made. It is not corrosive or harmful to stainless or carbon steels. Nor does it reek to high heavens. After you wipe it out. That is it. It prevents rusting.

Unlike some other cleaners, there are no corrosive or erosive elements to harm your bore.

G'Day Fella's

Thank you for you input and advice.
I'm not that computer literate and whilst I have heard of what you chaps mentioned, it's basically Greek to me.

I am a persistent pecker, so I will keep trying because I believe I have some experiences to share around. Thanks again.

When writing a longish contribution I copy it before posting. If told it I took too long, I find the thread again on the menu and just paste it back in.

Just be sure to make sure it goes in the barrel and stays there - it can be fatal to plastics, some painted synthetic stock finishes, some wood varnishes, etc.

To clean a dirty bore after shooting, I do the following:
- Spray carbon remover down the bore - I use Mercury/Quicksilver power tune (carburettor cleaner). This may not be necessary and previously I used a oily patch (kroil or good penetrating oil).
- Dry patch.
- Patch with Montana X-Treme copper cream. (used to use gold medallion, but copper cream is better and less abrasive)
- Dry patch.
- Repeat copper cream patch followed by dry patch as necessary - rarely needed for hunting rifles, more for competition rifles due to number of shots fired.
- Oily patch.
- Exterior wipe down.
- End.

Before shooting, I remove oil from the bore:
- dry patch
- patch soaked with Iso-propanol (IPA - pure rubbing alcohol - used for cleaning circuit boards etc and leaves no residue) (or lighter fluid). Can be sprayed down bore from aerosol
- dry patch (two if IPA spray used)
- sighter/ fouling shot. Some of my rifles shoot about 0.5cm high after this process on the first shot.

NEVER had a problem with carbon, copper build up, or anything. Never had to use a brush either.
I used to use a foam similar to wipeout until I ruined an expensive rotary magazine box, housing and synthetic stock (older injection moulded type - crap but nice shape).

Just my 2cents worth...

I now use Eezox on the outside of stainless barrels - or parker hale express oil (or kroil) on blued barrels.

Here's a vote for Eezox on blued barrels. It is the best rust preventative I've ever used.

What will Eezox do to the finish on rust blued barrels? I have never heard of this stuff, where did you buy it?

Eezox is available from many vendors, including Midway. I have never seen any damage to any metal finish. Eezox goes on as a thin liquid and quickly dries, leaving no visible or tactile film. It does a wonderful job of rust prevention.

Sorry - didn't mean to imply Eezox would affect blued barrels, just that I haven't tried it yet other than on stainless. Good to know others have had favourable experience with it.
