I am considering a double rifle- never owned one. Which comes highly recommended- Merkel, Krieghoff,Chapuis,Searcy,or Heym? It would be in .470. Thanks for your input.

I think you should handle them all if you can as this will remove some from the equation as some just will not feel comfortable in your hands whereas others will just "have it".

All have good and bad points.

btw - can you put your location in your profile, it makes it a lot easier to answer questions.

They all come highly recommended. IMHO, the Merkel is the closest to a British style DR. It has a real A&D action and a true splinter forend. The sights are odd, but I like them. I used to be able to shoot coke cans at 50 yards all day long. It's a good working double.

In my opinion, 470NE is a good choice, a versatile cartridge, you can shot wild boar's and elefant's, and it's not a too big problem to buy factory load's! The problem is your budget! HEYM made good double's in old english tradition, but not cheap, you have to paye about 15000 Euros. The Chapuis are good double's in French tradition of St.Etienne's gunmaker's, and are a little bit cheaper. Merkel are good one's, but rather in smaller caliber's like 9,3x74R for exemple. Krieghoff in big calibers are, in my opinion, a compromise, the action is to small and they look not very nice. For this reason, they are very cheap!
