One of our mates brought a 'big gun' to the range on Saturday for a bit of fun after the silhouette shoot: a .530 Woodleigh built on a P-14 action. There may only be 4 or 5 of these things in existence, certainly only one in Darwin!
It felt almost heavy enough with its fairly straight synthetic stock and a bunch of mercury recoil-reducers in the butt apparently! Nice clear ghost-ring peep. How hard can this be?
Well I only needed one shot to know that is the hardest kicker I have ever fired! Seems I felt every one of those 9,000 foot-pounds personally!
Hope they don't send me the bill for the bent ram!

Sounds like FUN - to watch.
Funny thing is, the second & subsequent shots usually come no where near the target - with a rifle like that. There are annomolies, though.

Marrakai, I heard that a 530Woodligh had made it to Darwin. I think only 4 were made.
Any idea who built the synthetic stock? Need pictures of this beast!! There was one owned by a Melbourne hunter/shooter (Dave M), he sold as it was blurring his eyesight with age and kicked like buggery ... any idea whether it originated from Melbourne? Cheers... Con

I can't even imagine. A .505 Gibbs is plenty of gun and more recoil than most will tolerate. Take that cartridge and neck it up to .530.....no thanks!!! Although, I would love to shoot it once. I had fun shooting the .460 Weatherby at 16lb bowling balls when I owned one

Both! I was tired of the poor scores I had in bowling, so I shot the damn ball at 100 yards with a 500 grain solid out of the .460! Talk about the smell of burning rubber Beautiful blonde rifle......sold it to my brother.

Con: My understanding was that Geoff McD_ had one, Dave M_ also (now sold?), this one in Darwin belonging to Chris G_, and one in Africa. You may be able to correct my assumptions...
Not sure of the origins of Chris's rifle. Will ask about provenance and take a photo or two when I see it next.
We Aussies obviously respect our bowling-balls a bit more than our American friends. Now, pins are a different matter....!

Marrakai, Went through the AHN forums as I remember seeing a picture of a 530Woodleigh up in Darwin. Apparently that is Dave M's old rifle. Cheers... Con

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's the .505 Gibbs necked up to .530.
I don't have the specs.

There was an article on this cartridge in a Big Game Express (BGRC newsletter) a couple of years back, when Geoff made the first one. I'll see if I can find it. ...but basically, what Der Jaeger said!

Marrakai, I'd love a scanned copy too. I notice Ed Hubel at AR has his 585BHE based on the Gibbs case and has mentioned going well beyond 2700fps with 650gr pills. Unsure what barrel length was used though. Makes you wonder whether the 530Woodleigh has been loaded to its potential, or just kept 'mild'. Cheers... Con
