Good articles in the newest Rifle magazine. Phil Shoemaker on the .375 Ruger, Brian Pierce on the 470 Turnbull Marlin and Mike Venturfino on a Mini Sharps and new DZ arms #3 Remington Hepburn.

Agree---have read most of them--quite informative...Surprised Boddington used the .475---as it is not a "Ruger"..

I'm sure he got a freebie, and in return he will tell every reader who writes in asking about the .45/70 on buffalo to buy a Turnbull 1895 in .470 Turnbull or 1886 in .475 Turnbull

Ha!!!

This was my thought, too!!

But look at the Grand New Reality.

The Levergun is now THE Dangerous Game Standard by which all others will be judged!!

"Also sprach Boddington".

{PS: I actually like these oddball articles. I liked the big flat bullets, too. }

I agree 9.3- I'd love to have a Marlin with 22" heavy barrel, chambered for the .50 Alaskan - 24" twist for the 550gr. RCBS Bullet.
I've a bit of loading exerience with the .50 Alaskan. My Rolling Block, with a Harry McGowen barrel (St. Anne Ill.) ran 1 1/2 min. of angle at 100 (5 shot groups), then duplicate that at 200yards (5 shot groups), using tang and globe sights. It would do this with either black powder loads or smokeless. I ran it up to 1,950 fps with those 550gr. WW bullets. That would not be a choice load for a Marlin lever gun, but a 1,500fps would be, for North American bears.

G'day Daryl,
how do you find the .50 Alaskan, I nearly bought a DR in that cal a couple of years ago (I wish I had now). Have you used it on much game as yet? I have a large Martini action which I am trying to decide on a good conversion for and the .50 Alaskan was one of the calibers I am thinking about.

All the best and good shooting, Ian

watto,
Was the 50Alaskan you were looking at a SxS built on an AyA shotgun action? If so, did you ever ask who built it?
Cheers...
Con

I never got to use the .50 Alaskan on game, I built it for black powder silhouette. The 28" heavy barrel brought the wieght to 11 1/2 pounds, thus recoil was of no concesquence - with any load.

It would be a good one for a double for North America, and most game on the 'dark' continent. How it would do with a hardened WW bullet on elephant, I don't know.

The article I didn't mention in the 'RIFLE' and perhaps the best one, was by Ganayana - a topic which comes up here more often than any other and with so much emotion, too.
The sentence which says it all is on page 77 where he says a client does not need a stopping rifle - he needs a hunting rifle and one he and the rifle are capable of putting a bullet into the vitals from any angle. Thus we have the great 9.3x62 and the .375. Oh, there are others, but these two have become favourites of mine as well, if not exactly, at least in performance. He also adresses the normal poor shooting of the clients - I am not pointing fingers, but those who only shoot factory ammo are suspect. Such are my findings in short 30 years I've been guiding.

Articles and books addressing this particular aspect of hunting, I hope, will instill a desire and purpose in ALL hunters, to get out and practice from hunting postions. Do not merely 'practise' by checking the sights on a paper target from a bench with the use of a shooting assist device designed to remove them from discomfort. If that is the case, surely they will miss badly when the time comes to shoot from the shoulder - such seems to be the case more often than not.

I didn't guide last fall due to back trouble, but I was in the same camp for 'guard' duty. My brother guided two and ended up killing their moose for them. Such is normal. It shouldn't be.

Darryl,

Not sure if you read the thread a week or two ago regarding .416 vs 458 vs, etc...but that is the article I quoted as well..which, in my experience the solid out of the .416 Rem, as does the .375, has substantial penetration..more than the larger slower calibers...

BUT, see the view of needing the stopping rifle as well..on my brown bear hunt in AK, I dropped a brown bear with the first shot out of a .375, he dropped, roared and got up again and started to run-- the guide fired a shot out of his .458 and completely missed by a substantial amount on the running shot..thankfully I was able to get another into the bear as he was heading into the brush..

Same for elephant, when the **** hits the fan, I feel more comfortable in counting on myself versus someone else...

Ah, yes,,,so many guns, so little time...
