Encore Rifle in .375 Ouch & Ouch!
      #11705 - 17/03/04 10:45 AM

I'm getting old in my slow age. It just sunk in that Robgunbuilder said he has a Encore in .375 H&H.

Sounds like a recipe for pain to me

How do the Encore rifles do accuracy wise and considering how light they are do they kick as much as it would appear at first grimace? I was looking at one in .45-70 the other day at my favorite gun shop and it seemed really insubstantial for that round much less the .375.

I don't have one in .375 H&H although they are chambered for that caliber and up to .416 Rigby and worse. My biggest Encore round is a long throat .405 Win operating at 58-60Kpsi. I think somebody asked me why bother with a long throat .405 when a .375 H&H barrel is available. The recoil is of my .405 Win is suprisingly moderate( 400 gr bullet at 2150fps). However, accuracy is down right phenomenal. I use muzzel brakes and one mercury recoil reducer. The Encore can take enormous pressures. I have good evidence of them surviving at 85 KPSI. The frame will stretch( and rebound) and brass will verify this, but they are extremely strong actions. Eventually they will stretch far enough to cause headspace problems, but that takes a lot of heavy loads. Felt recoil is ofter more of a function of bad stock design than anything else.-Rob

Oops, sorry about that Rob, I thought you or someone else said they had the .375.

The idea of a potent S/S that takes down for travel is quite appealing. Keep us apprised on how the .405 project is doing.

Rick

I have a 24" .45-70 on a Contender with Rynite stock. This gun weighs right at 6½ lbs loaded with scope. With factory 300 gr. loads free recoil is about 33 fpe. It was a bit intimidating at first but I can now easily shoot it from the bench.

405 gr. loads of about 1800 fps give about 36 fpe free recoil. 1800 fps is about as fast as you can go in the Contender. I would not hesitate to use the load but don't have a suitable target!

The only reason I would get an Encore is to shoot either the 6.5x55mm or the .375 H&H. With the proper barrel configuration recoil shouldn't be any worse.

In my opinion, the problem is not the chambering but the design of the Encore stock. The design turns your hand upright and does not allow for a good smooth "roll" with reciol. I have a 7 pound .375 H + H with a Classic stock that recoils much lighter than an Encore with a 30-06 barrel.

It would be neat to have a packable rifle in .375 H&H, but it'll have to wait till I hear from a survivor of actually firing one

Buckeyeshooter,

Well, I know several shooters who praise the Encore stock design for it's ability to handle recoil. As I said I don't have one (I do believe they changed the Rynite version a bit, though) but have considered it. I only really want a 6.5x55 and a .375 H&H. If the last is too much, maybe a .375 2½ inch NE Flanged?

I've been shooting a 375H&H on an encore frame for a while now... anywhere from 10 to 30 rounds at a sitting, from 200 to 300 gr loads... factory and home rolled... you definately don't want to be in a low varmint shooters crouch when you touch one off but from an upright sitting or offhand position it's not bad... this is with the plastic stock and no added weight... only added a 1 1/2 X 5 Bushnell scope to it...

accuracy wise I have found the heavier bullets to be the ticket... the 275 and 300 gr seem to be the most accurate at longer ranges {100-200 yds}... with Sierra 300spbt I'm averaging about 1 1/4" at 100yds...

I also load 45-70's with a hardcast 405gr GC bullet to around 2000fps... this is the one to have a muzzle brake and some more weight in the stock...

as for a easy packing rifle, I have a double sided break down shotgun case that I can load out 2 stocked actions and 4 scoped barrel setups in... for carrying in the woods you'd be hard pressed to find a lighter handier rifle than the encore...

375 H&H... one world, one caliber...

Rockfish,

Aren't you a refugee from the Marlin Talk Forum? Too bad it closed, that was a really unique form of customer service IMHO.

Thanks for the info, obtaining an Encore may become my next selfdestructive obesssion.

Rick
