Which new double is cheapest?
      #113254 - 01/09/08 09:09 PM

If a chap wished to save his pennies for a double in the vicinity of .470, which would be the first that his savings account could tackle? Would it be the Merkel 140?

Many thanks,

Ben

I looked around - here in EU the cheapest .470 NE would be Blaser S2 (Standard) - price 5900 EUR, Merkel 140A - 6400 EUR, Krieghoff Classic Big Five - 6900 EUR, ...Heym 88 PH - 12000 EUR.

P.S. Correction on Merkel.

Take a look at the prices of those rifles in Europe vs. the US.

Merkel, 140A = 6,400€ = $12,000 (1.875 multiple)

HEYM, PH = 12,000€ = $16,500 (1.375 multiple)

I guess we're not charging engough for the HEYM?

Check Searcy's post here on NE but I think he said 10,000 US for a new 450/400 PH model--

Ben

In Australia check out the importers/dealers selling the Chapuis and the Merkel for the least costly doubles in .470. Krieghoff is also worth a look.

Heym are reportedly of very good value and quality but this is reflected in a higher price. I understand Chris (new_guy) from Heym USA on here has sold to Aussie buyers as well.

Do the rounds and check them out.

Searcy is an import job so you have to do all that work yourself. And if it needs sending back for 'adjustment' you have to export and re-import it yourself as well. The others have importers/distributors.

There are other makers from Italy, Spain etc whom make an attractively priced product as well. Blaser is another maker if you want to consider their double rifle.

If you wished to consider a 9.3x74R the price of such a double is considerably less, as is other medium calibres.

Ben

Also keep an eye out for second hand "new" doubles. Unlike a 'vintage' dbl rifle they can be cheaper than a new one.

As an example I have seen a base grade Merkel in .470 advertised for about $8-9,000. Not cheap but it sold quickly. A medium grade rifle new in a similar make and base model can be down to about $5-7,000.

Standard grade sort of modern doubles expect to be in the $12-20,000 price range and way way more too.

Some Spanish/Italian makers can be as low as $3,000 but rarely seen. Sometimes can have some problems.

Also a 'vintage' BP double rifle say in .450 BP can be in the same sort of price range ie$3-6,000 but it all depends on what is being sold.

A Baikal side by side in .45/70 is available in a gun shop right now for approx $A1,200 but it is not a Merkel .470 by any means.

I'm not in the market myself so my estimates might not be current.

Thanks, John! Where is the ground to which one must keep his ear in order to encounter such rifles second-hand? Cheers, Ben

Is the grade of a double rifle a matter of engraving and timber character?
