Both the 416 Rem and the 400 H&H, are basically the same design, a 375 necked up..either is an excellent round and neither need to be improved as those torpedeo shaped cases will extract even when the case malfunctions, they don't stick in the chamber like an improved case would do...and improving gains nothing anyway in most cases...

I think the 416 Rem is by far the more practical and factory ammo is available, but the 400 is an interresting round, would be fun to own one...I will probably build one on a Mauser one day..

Geez, you had to get me thinking, ......I'm just waiting for delivery of a Ruger #1 in .405 to rechamber to 450/400 3", and now this .411 comes around. Would the H&H clean up on a rechamber, and would it be any better than the 450/400? ............Maybe I've got to change the order to 2 rifles! ......Any thoughts?

I think you should stick to your first choice in converting your No.1 to 450/400 3" since it would be easier to get brass. Unless you want to form all your own brass for the 400 H&H, the H&H brass will probably cost you an arm and a leg.

The good cheap way is to pick up a Ruger 77 MK11 and
have it converted to 416 Taylor for a close ballistic twin

Castoff,

Do you have .375 load and pressure data for H414? I have a double rifle in .375 and am looking for a lower pressure powder.

Did any of you guys ever build the 400 H&H rifles you were thinking about?

H&H built a handful, but I am unaware of anyone else doing it. Supposedly Blaser was going to make 400 H&H barrels for the R93 but that never came to pass.

I've continued the loading of this cartridge and IMO, it's quite easy caliber to reload. Getting 2460 is easy with several different powders from 24" barrel. However I like to use either Hodgdon "Extreme" powders or VihtaVuori N100 -series powders. H4350 and N150 are quite good. I will reduce my loads to 2375 fps.

One thing that I like about this cartridge is that it puts all loads in same group. Accuracy of my rifle is 1 1/4 MOA. Woodleigh SP and Hornady DGX shoot exactly at the same velocity and they have a same POI @ 100 meters. I really like this kind of rifle. It can be used as a true "one rifle".

Can you tell us about the rifle you are shooting these from? I am also curious about feeding and extraction.

Interesting, I've been shooting Ackley Improved cases since 1977 and have never had one stick. They are the easiset extracting case designs I've ever used. I once had a pressure excursion in a .375IMP (wrong powder for the case) and the bolt opened normally, however the rear of the case was almost gone - melted. I tilted the rifle up and the case fell from the chamber - I have never seen one stick.

I have had lots of bolts stick on tapered case chambered rounds when developing hot loads, however.

I am a fool and a socker at the same time. I know from a practical point of view Remingtons 416cal is the winner, but Holland & Hollands .400 looks sexier, and has the right stamp in the bottom .
I know one day, a good custom M98 in .400 H&H will find its way into gunlocker. I have an original commercial action from 1934 + bottom-metal all marked for that project. That cartridge was born to be classic.

My rifle is a custom Sako L61R. Rifle was originally in 7 mm Rem Mag and nothing has been changed in the action. This rifle feeds all ammo with no problems at all. In my opinion it is way easier to make old Sako to feed properly than to hand tune a Mauser which needs everything to be changed. That's why I like to use Sako AIII, AV and L61R in my projects. At the moment I have .300 H&H, .375 H&H and .400 H&H built in these. I also have one barreled to my own 9,3x68 M&W.

All of these rifles use the original magazine boxes and unaltered actions and they work like nothing else. I also have a bunch of Mausers and I have to admit that I'm not that big fan of CRF anymore.
