416 gerlach anyone??
      #107756 - 20/06/08 02:22 PM

Anyone have any experience with this cartridge? Does any company even make brass for the 416 Gerlach?

Thanks
Pat

My understanding is it was a 'failed' experiment in terms of being adopted by any manufacturers. The one rifle may have been all that was ever produced. The Gerlach was A-Squares cartridge right?

I don't know too much about it, but I do recall that A-Square was making the brass for whatever testing they were doing...so I would think they could produce some if asked with the right monetary tone?

Pat, what do you already know about this cartridge?

I would very much like to hear 'the story' on the 416 Gerlach

My experience with Gerlach is that it's a 'last stop' for many hunters on the way out into the ranges around the Black Rock Desert.

Perhaps Bruno, the owner of the lodge/restaurant/cocktail lounge made an effort to find another way to get Gerlach on the map.

Tinker-

I'll type up the info I have when I get home (i'm away from home at the moment). My understanding (From what I've read) was that it was named for a gent during WWII I believe who liked to launch projectiles from tanks at ridiculous speeds.

But I'll see if I can't get it typed up for you.....according to my data (A-Square Reloading manual) the only bullet weight they have is a 118 gr solid bullet....but they're launching it ....really....really ...fast...I think the powder charges I saw listed were around 140gr etc. launching somewhere near 5000fps........yea

Back on this later
Pat

Pat-

Thanks for the reply.
I definitely look forward to seeing what you (or anyone else) can come up on this one.

Gerlach is a tiny town on the edge of the Black Rock Desert, 400 or so square miles of dead flat nothing.
I've known for years of old varminters who shoot coyotes and jackrabbits in that area.
I wonder if this is a big bore rifle enthusiast's fantasy round for splattering their favorite varmints across the huge open desert landscapes out there in Nevada.

“The cartridge was named after a German Anti-Tank gun designer. Gerlach was the first man, prior to World War II, to break 4,000FPS with anti-tank cannon. He used a tapered bore. In his 28-20, the projectile was 28mm in diameter at the breech and exited the muzzle at 20mm diameter. This change in diameter was allowed by collapsible skits on the projectile which folded in as it moved down the tapered bore.”
From the A-Square manual

Also noted as far as loads go they have it with 146gr of H-4895 out of a 34 inch barrel going 5,325 fps with a 118gr Monolithic Solid…………………yea….

there is a tid bit for ya!
pretty nuts huh?

Thanks for the note Pat

This gives me some food for thought on the town of Gerlach.
For quite some time many decades ago the Black Rock Desert (biggest flat spot on the earth it seems) was used as a gunnery test range.
I wonder if there is some connection there.

On the topic of the cartridge, it surely sounds like a barrel-burner.

The Gerlach was A-Squares acceptance to build a 'mile a second' rifle!! Their 416Rimmed was aimed at matching 416Rigby velocities from a double. It seems to have fallen by the wayside however and the 500/416NE picked up the slack.
Cheers...

Tinker

I used to know a girl named Gerlach. She lived in Ballard, part of Seattle.

I didn't know they named a whole town after her.

Mickey-

If she was pale, flat, dry, and hot it all makes sense to me.
