Smallbore Doubles

Pictures of my smallbore doubles. Top to bottom: J&W Tolley .318WR Johann Springer 8X57JR Manton .22HP (FOR PHOTOS SEE POST BELOW. The Springer is a boxlock with sideclips. A very "English" looking rifle from what I consider the best Austrian maker. Now the Manton is a real peach! A .22HP on a small Webley long bar action. Perfection! You can see the striking size differences in these three rifles especially from the top view.

Very nice collection. I really like the little 22HP. Is it accurate, any thoughts on selling?

I have never hand loaded for the Manton - something I want to try. From memory, it shot well with factory ammo (about 17 years ago when it belonged to my brother).
It is not for sale. Seems as though there is quite a revival in interest in the .22HP doubles lately. Ever since Lewis Drake had a H&H on offer a couple years ago, they seem to be cropping up more regularly. I would like to see some in person to see if they are "scaled down" as the Manton is.
The Tolley I would sell though if there is any interest.

Sometimes they shoot very well, and others are not accurate at all in that calibre, from my experience. It does take the right hand load in either event.

I really like long bar Webleys, especially the A&WC but hey that PHV1 is cute as hell! Congrats!

I'm a buyer on that gun should you change your mind.

Huvius,

Beautiful little rifles. Whenever you find time, would you please take full length pictures of them and post them here?

I can see why the Manton is your favourite though all of them are stunningly beautiful.

I am a real fan of small bore double rifles. These are three fine ones.

I must confess, that Manton .22HP on the diminutive PHV-1 is an eye-catcher.

Huvius, don't sell it to Sinner. Sell it to me! Sinner has more DR's than he needs, whereas I sorely need a few more.

A gunmaker I know here in denmark has a 7x57R double...won`t sell ofcouse...But ever since i have seen it, I know now that one day a smallbore double will be in my gunsafe

I'm curious--

Who would make a nice 30-30 Double with claw mounts at the 10-12K level??

Suggestions anyone??

Don't know of anybody offering such. Probably the closest approximation is a double in 7x65R offered by Merkel or Chapuis.

The smallest caliber/physical size of any current DR is the Heym 80B in 22 Hornet. I have one on order, about a 12 month wait. They size all of their DRs to fit the caliber requested and will build from simple (a bit of scroll engraving) to as elaborate as you want. The result is a tiny but lovely DR that can be -- as will mine -- be scoped and perfectly accurate out to the range of the cartridge. A 'varmint DR.'

I also just acquired a Merkel 141 in 7X57R. Merkel 141s (and the sidelock iteration, the 161) are built on 28ga sized frames and are significantly smaller and lighter than their full sized half brothers, the 140 and 160. I believe the 141 in 7X57R is the current 'champ' for small caliber DRs. The 141s (I also have a 161 ex EWA gun in 7.65R) are an absolute delight to shoot and can be had off the shelf in this caliber or the 7.65R, can be ordered with a scope, and provide low priced, not low quality, DR fun in a chambering that is low recoil, can be 'fed' cheap and off the shelf, and make for fine shooting at reasonable range.

My 'baby' vintage DR is a WR boxlock 22HP. A complete hoot to shoot, nicely made and nicely engraved and accurate. Again, you can buy factory ammo off the shelf for a very reasonable price for those times when you don't have time to handload and, to be frank, the cost savings in this caliber and others such as 7X57R is not as significant as when shooting the bigger Nitro chamberings. I also have a lovely Webley-Scott in 250-3000 I bought from George Caswell last year. Again, zero recoil, easy and cheap to feed by stopping in at the local Gander Mountain on the way to the range and built to size. There is just something very neat and right about a small proportioned DR.

He is a really nice person to deal with. I don't have any double rifles but I bought a Mauser custom rifle from him and am very happy with it.

I had an Austrian double in 7X65R and it was a real hotrod. Much more powerful than a 30/30.
Really, it's performance is about the same as a 7mm Remington Mag. eventhough it predates the Rem. by decades.
