Cocking piece peep sight question
      #391378 - 29/04/25 11:09 PM

Looking through the pages I see several rifles with cocking piece peep sights, some of which are windage adjustable which obviously adds more weight. I have a 1910 coming with a Lyman peep. I have a Lyman for Springfield 103 windage adjustable peep that I might try to fit if it clears the rear tang. My question is do I need a stronger firing pin spring to deal with the added weight. Wolff lists the factory spring @ 17# and a replacement spring @ 19#. Any input would be appreciated.

The replacement spring would decrease lock time regardless if you mounted the sight or not. This is always a good thing for mauser-type actions. IMHO

I understand that but sometimes increase in spring strength can cause difficult cocking as well. Is the more powerful spring worth the effort?

It is only 2 pounds.
I have gone from a 12 pound Mauser spring to a 19 pound Mauser spring (on all my Mausers) without having trouble with cocking the rifle.
My Springer "takes" 48 pounds to cock - I shoot it for 3 hours indoors every Wed. afternoon I'm almost 75. If you feel weak, push some weights.

Off base Daryl. I've had 2 Mausers where a spring change to heavier caused stiff camming such that it had to be beat open. Why? Don't know. I've read other cases as well attributed to the spring in Mausers. It was a simple question- worth it or not. I'll sort it out. Thanks for the input.

My experience with that is 3 Parker Hales, VZ 34 and a 1953 marked 98.
My 2 Mark 10's already had good springs. Forgot my 9.3x62 (dont know what model) I put a heavy spring in it as well.NP just.lucky, sounds like.

Re-read my first response, sorry about that. On some meds. for my new knee and had a couple beer on top - My bad!
I don't get on the fight, but can be sarcastic. Again, sorry - you're right, was "off base/side".

All is well, apology not necessary. Just looking for real life experience with added mass and associated inertial effects. As to the Mauser's assume the added coils likely created interference internally. One Mexican and one 98.

How much does the 19# spring cost? Is it inexpensive enough to try it and see if it works, before you add the peep sight?

I don't remember, Don but got all of mine from Brownells.

The spring is cheap enough. It's changing the sights out for an experiment and then making sure elevation of the rear sight will work. I really need the rifle in hand to assess the situation which will be soon. Just thinking ahead is all. Springs can be bought directly from Wolff's.

Oh yeah- Wolff's Springs - that might have been where I got them - or maybe Wolff springs from Brownells.

I'd shoot it first. If the rifle shoots OK, don't worry about it.
