Quote:

The Victory of Victories: This No. 9 of 20 limited edition Melissa Rigby .500NE Rising Bite double rifle was built by Rigby gunmakers back in December 2020. As with all Melissa Rigby limited edition Rigby doubles, the rifle features an enamel grip cap trap numbered by the founding John Rigby’s descendant. Most notably across the metal work on the rifle you will see open florid large scroll, with a deep cut stippled background, incorporating Arabic-style ornamentation, with carved flowers and ancient Arabic battle scenes.

The engraving might not be in my taste, but the work is flawless, absolutely wonderful piece of working art!

The engraving looks fine to. Interesting scenes. One looks like a chariot in a battle? Another elephant borne warriors against horse? The belly a main holding a severed head in his hand upheld?

The photo quality is just good enough to have my attention on the engraving subjects, but not good enough to actually see what's going on with much detail

Distracting actually

What I find actually frustrating is when I put up voluntarily, free of any advertising, modern Rigby creations, there is always negative comments, no matter what.

The criticism of image quality is my fault. As displaying images on these forums requires them to be shrinked to fit. I've fixed that with a link on each image to an original larger image. As any non directly supplied image from the internet there will always be size limitations for net viewing reasons.

The linked images can be expanded to view better.

John it's not your fault, don't take it personally

When *anything* is presented with lush engraving scenes, the embellishments will be noticed

When an engraving scene appears to feature someone holding an apparent severed head, the engraving scene becomes *the* subject

In the world of theater this is know as "upstaging"

The feature is (want it or not) presented between the viewer and whatever the otherwise intended subject is
Subsequently the feature gets a perhaps otherwise unwarranted share of the attention

You didn't push the press release of this image package
Whoever did may have simply overlooked the presentation of a beheading scene in the artwork
Meanwhile, the audience who has been present to the highly sensationalized terrorist culture of the past twenty-odd years is bound to wonder WTF is that dude doing on the action of that rifle holding some other dude's head

The beheading scene is upstaging the rifle

It's mentioned as an historical scene. Not idea which?

I once jokingly mentioned a Conan the Barbarian doubke rifle featuring gruesomevengravingbscenex and a skull and cross bones safety button. Instead of FIRE and SAFETY the wordS DEATH and LIFE.

I think a safety like that may exist. I may have lost the image.

Luckily I didn't win the $100 million lotto last night so my Mac plans are not yet achievable.

As for the Rigby it's a rifle made to a client's specifications.

The contour of the forend iron and the forend where it meets the action are different from what I've seen on other Rigby rising bite rifles

I wonder if that's just special sculpting for this rifle or if there's a functional purpose for that feature

Not to my liking at all.

I agree entirely with what Tinker said about the engraving. I don't care what level of skill is exhibited. If the product is inappropriate or unappealing, the art fails.

A double rifle is the quintessential sporting arm; not a combat weapon. If it is to display scenes or pictures, the theme should be sporting use of the rifle.

It is not out of bounds to express genuine opinions of Rigby's current production, whether or not advertising is present.

I remember many years ago an actual Holland & Holland catalog In my possession in which there was featured an H&H Royal Deluxe double rifle embellished with pictures of the character, "J.R. Ewing" of the American television show "Dallas." We laughed at that, with no recrimination. But there's no dispute the embellishment of that rifle was done with impeccable skill. That doesn't make it appropriate or attractive. Yeah, some rich client ordered it. Does that mean I should admire it? Not for me.

I had not noticed the beheading scene until this morning when I read this thread and Tinker's critique. I'm a little late to this thread. That's just a shitty scene and inappropriate for use on a sporting arm. Call a spade a spade. Let the rich guy who ordered it puff it to his friends. I would not want it in my collection.

JMHO, YMMV

Well it's not in your collection so ... who cares ....

The scene in the engraving could well be from the owners personal family history.

Please post away and share images from your collection of suitable firearms directly to these forums. For us to all enjoy.

PS MY Robert E Howard Conan the Barbarian inspired double rifle is still not to be. Coincidentally another $100 million lotto tonight, which I neglected to enter. I'm letting it jackpot.

Then the black dr engraved with skull piles, mythical beasts and scantily clad nubile big hosomed wenches ...

That's true! My only point was that it's ok not to like the embellishment on any given rifle or gun. Rigby can make a fine rifle; but heaven knows, they have turned out some real doozies over the past decade.

I may have sounded a bit shrill, but that was not my intention.

Have I not done exactly that?

There are a few more that have arrived on my doorstep I may have neglected in the past few years. I might stir around and put out a surprise or two.
