As we don't have an optics forum and I have this mount on a Carcano, I'll ask this question here....How accurate are the old two screw, detachable " Field " side mounts when it comes to removing and re-attaching ?
How well do they keep zero ?

The 2 screw military side mounts for the No. 32 scope on the Lee Enfield N.4(T) had a good reputation for returning to zero, but they relied on big thumb wheels compressing 2 stout springs to ensure return to base centres.
The test is to zero, remove, reinstall carefully, shoot 3 rounds, remove , reinstall, shoot another 3 etc. plotting each group accurately.
After about 12 rounds you should know the answer, but if the group centres fall within a 1 inch circle you are doing very well.

That is great advice tho statistically, the 10-shot group is best.
At least 5 tho.
A 10-shot group with plotted POI {a bit tedious but easy to do} will give you a really solid foundation for your assessment of the mount.

I don't see how they would not return to zero unless there was some sloop in the base where the screws go through. The couple of times I have taken the mounts of my Slazenger 22 Hornet (Lithgow 303converted to 22 Hornet) there has been no change to point of impact.

My expectation would be very low chances of return to zero.
Most of them Field mounts were not at all high precision or well engineered. Perhaps as mentioned they had a better class for actual sniper rifles, but most of the ones on farmers' 303s were not made for high precision remove and replace operations.
And sadly, the gunsmiths that mounted them were VERY variable too. They didn't have Tek screws then, but boy there were some doozies.
