The Late Herr Schönauer
      #329445 - 18/06/19 07:32 PM

From the December, 1913 issue of Arms and Explosives - London:

THE LATE HERR SCHONAUER.
Otto Schonauer, of the Austrian Arms Factory, recently died after a long illness. He has hitherto been best known in this country in association with the rifle that bears his name. Mannlicher's name naturally overshadowed that of all the other workers in the Steyr factory, but Schonauer has been prominently connected with the business for a very long period. In the year 1889 he became works inspector, and in 1896 technical director. But forty-five years is his total spell of service in the one establishment, for it was in 1868 that as a young man he attracted the notice of Werndl, who took him to Steyr. Before that he had worked in the arms factory of Vetterli in Neuhausen. The son of poor parents, he rose through his own energy and ability to what may be regarded as the highest position open to a maker of rifles. Though he lived to the age of sixty-nine, he just failed to witness the concluding stages of the last great task be set himself to perform, viz., certain comprehensive extensions and rearrangements of the factory that he loved so well. Like many other men of high technical eminence in the engineering world Schonauer was as successful a commercial organiser as a rifle mechanician. The logical mode of thought which made the various models of Mannlicher rifles so successful solved the business problems of economical production and profitable sale.
