whats your hunting shooting experience with .375Ex/9mm MS?
      #323651 - 23/01/19 06:29 AM

I am thinking of purchasing one this year and having it be my go to hunting rifle for the next few years, I plan on using it for a 1-200yrd gun for larger white-tail and Texas exotics.

I was curious what your experience with it has been? Thank you.

I shot a young bull moose (long yearling maybe 250lbs.) with my 9.3x57 - similar ballistics I assume, with a 270gr. Speer starting out at 2,300fps and hitting the moose at 200yards, impact vel. about 1,850fps. The bullet hit on a rising angle, though the leg bone beside the rib cage.

Killed the moose, but that particular bullet went to pieces on the 2 1/2" diameter leg bone, with frags entering the on-side lung. It did knock the animal down for an easy finishing shot.

With good bullets, like the 250gr. old style Barnes I now have, the RWS, Norma or the Nosler's I would not hesitate to shoot anything you can find in NA with it, including the big bears.

Like Daryl, I have experience with the almost-identical 9.3x57. I had two I used for hunting and killed quite a number of whitetail deer, elk and black bear as well as coyotes and ground squirrels and a butcher sheep once as well with them. I no longer have a 9.3x57 but do have 2 9.3x62's which are somewhat out of the league of the virtual twins of the 9.5 M/S and 9.3x62.

What we are saying about the 9.3x57 is basically ditto for the 9.5 M/S. The 9.3x57 is one of my favorite calibers however and within the range limitations and on game to elk size I consider it one of the most reliable and useful rifle cartridges made. I had excellent results with mine. Recoil is mild and terminal effect substantial.

I used 285 grain Prvi Partizan RN and sized down Hornady 225 grain Spire Point bullets {latter reduced from .375 to groove diameter of my rifles @ .368}. I like the Prvi at x57 velocities very much. I generally like fairly soft bullets by the way as long as they give adequate penetration and I've not had any penetration problems of course on the game I've shot with the 9.3x57.

In that rifle you intend to get, I'd look hard at the Hornady 225 Spire Point if it feeds well and you can even find them. I think they are discontinued? 300 Hornady's might be a smidge iffy in that they are a bit erratic in expansion down under 1850-1900 fps. For deer I bet the Sierra 200's would be excellent. I'd probably start with Speer 235 grain Semi-spitzers. I've used them in .375 H&H Mag and bet they'd expand well at x56 velocities. Might make a good all-rounder for you.

I've lost lots of pix from the photobucket debacle, but here are some I managed somehow to save.

Cow elk shot at 150 yards;

Doe shot at 200 yards;

Buck;

Another;

Spike;

On good medium bores, Elmer Keith used to say "You can eat right up to the hole";

Grouse and some home-made bullets {9x19 cases};

Me and a little ridgerunner;

And another;

And one more;

I had forgotten about the 235's and 225gr.ers.

Yes - the 225 gr.SP Horandy is discontinued in .375. They sport a 1/16" thick jacket below the cannelure, hence the good penetration, full length just about, on 9.3's deer. If you can find, them they are a good bullet in .375 or sized down for the 9.3mm.

In 9mm, the 250gr. Hornady is a terrific bullet for moose and elk when started about 2,100 to 2,200fps.
I suspect the 250 SP is also good.

In .375, the 220gr. Hornady FP, if started even down around 1900fps works a treat on moose in the bush. I've killed 2 with that one, a huge dry cow and 2 year old bull, both from my .375 Winchester M94 - 1,940fps mv.

The .375 Nitro Express Rimless 2.25" is the 9.5 X57 Mannlicher Schönauer - .375"=9.525mm

The 9mm MS is a 9X56

The M1905 MS was chambered for the 9X56, the M1910 for the 9.5X57 (.375 Nitro Express Rimless 2.25").

M1903 - 6.5X54 (DWM477)............................................................................ M1905 - 9X56 (DWM491E)
M1908 - 8X56 (DWM528)............................................................................... M1910 - 9.5X57 (DWM531)

As noted in the 'English Ballistics' above, the .375 RNE, though the same dimensions as the 9.5X57MS, was loaded with two grains less Cordite. Both the 9X56 and 9.5X57 MS are loaded 45 grains, the .375 at 43.

Here it is in metric:

Here's a 9.5X57 (M1910) hunting account from member Marrrakai:
