M-S 1903 Lang Stutzen: interesting variation by Glaser
      #318904 - 08/08/18 08:58 PM

That fine Mannlicher-Schönauer 1903 stutzen sports a special order 23" barrel and has been proofed in Vienna in 1924.
Glaser Waffen in Zürich, Switzerland, retailed the rifle and fitted a Carl Zeiss "Zielmulti" 1-4x R1 variable scope on superbly handcrafted claw mounts before adding a quickly removable comb to ease use of that fine glass [a great innovation then that first appeared mid 1922]
As you can see this 1903 retains near 100% of its original finish.
With a perfect bore the accuracy remains superb, overall functioning is butter smooth and the Jena made scope delivers a surprising clean picture.

Regards to all.

Joel, thanks for posting. Superb looking rifle with with very nicely made rings and bases. The comb raiser looks the part as well. Fantastic condition.

Joel, I am sorry I had missed this superb rifle that, in my opinion, beats most of the M. 1903 we have seen around for a while.

The combination of its mint condition, special order long barrel, first-time seen removable comb, almost as new rare Zeiss Zielmulti scope, unusual front scope mount base (at that time usually inserted into the front ring while on that one the front scope mount base has been soldered onto the front ring), and renowned Glaser 'signature' make it a piece that I am pretty sure most MS collectors would dream to have on their racks.

Do you intend to sell this rifle, as I have not seen it on your website https://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/guns/fin...ICHER-SCHÖNAUER

Louis,

We will offer it for sale in the incoming days.
It's one of the best 1903 MS we have ever encountered...and we have seen a lot !

Rothhammer, I was wondering whether this long barrel (for a stutzen) and comb are listed as options on your Stoeger catalog?

Now, you've done it .

The (up to) 23" barrel for an M1903 is the first 'option' listed. Other variations of the stock were also listed, but no removable comb.

Here are full images of the three pages (50, 51, 52) of Mannlicher Schoenauer from the 1939 Stoeger.
Note the barrel lengths and that the M1903, M1905, M1908, M1910 are only offered as carbines (stutzen).
The "Mannlicher Schoenauer High Velocity Rifle with sporter half stock", however, could be ordered with "Full stock in rifles which normally have half stock" from the options list for an additional $10.
The Takedown is "only made in the sporter half stock model, not in the carbine, and on special order only."

Does "special order" and "regularly available in the following calibers" (the High Velocity) infer that the M1903, 05, 08, 10 could still be 'special ordered' as halfstock or takedown as late as 1939? Would it be possible to import Austrian rifles to the U.S. after the Anschluss of March, 1938?

Spares of part #2 above, Foresight, are what is stored in the removable grip cap on MS so equipped.

Good investment for $15.00, although it would have been a big extra cost back then considering how much the whole rifle cost. Very cool though, I can only wish. I could never afford such a wonderful beauty sadly

The wonderful beauty is now for sale, along with three other attractive siblings, see https://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/guns/new-arrival/?lang=en

Dorléac, an American friend of mine currently working with me abroad asked me whether you could export MS rifles to the US or if they were also restricted items, as thumb-cut Mauser are?

Oh, now you've encouraged him... .

It is somewhat limited as it only represents the offerings of one retailer and what they were importing to the United States and at that late date, but still offers a nice window through which to see what was available (to the U.S. market) regarding the 'classic' or 'prewar' Mannlicher Schönauer at its apex.

I'm glad to share it with the community, and NE is the best place I have found to do so.

Someday I'll get back to flat scanning the entire 512 pages of the 1939 Stoeger catalog and sending the images to Nitrox for archive. Until then, I'll gladly scan any pages or images of the catalog to share here with members. Just ask.

Here are the index pages:

My apologies to Joel (Dorleac) if I'm 'horning in' on your thread, and thank you always for sharing photos of sublime Mannlicher Schönauers as well as your own impeccably crafted masterpieces.

Don't feel too bad. Surely, most who viewed these items in the U.S. of 1939 (the 'great depression') felt the same way.

According to usinflationcalculator.com , that $15.00 would equate to $271.95 in today's USD.

A Takedown in 10.75x68 with the folding peep sight, sight protector, 'stock of specially selected pretty wood', and Antinit barrel with rib ($93 of options added to a $175 rifle) would have cost today's equivalent $4858.82 .

Perhaps for an even 'five grand' they'd throw in the removable grip cap with extra sight bead stored therein (not listed in the Stoeger)?

That cased M1905 is rather similar (different scope and mount, though) to my cased M1910.

M1905 available from Dorleac - 3300 Euro. C'est magnifique!

Yes, indeed we can export commercial MS across the pond .
We need the US import license before applying for the CE French export transfer authorization.
Then the rifle is entrusted to Ziegler International who take care of the transportation.
The customer must be patient, the entire process going four to six months.

Best regards to all.

Joel,

Do you have an importer you regularly work with in the U.S.? Can you give an estimate of the total cost of export, shipping, and import to U.S.?

Thank you very much.

Usually it's the customer who chooses his importer according to his location [the USA is a vast territory !]
Our export company works at the request of the end customer.
We have exported only a small number of weapons to your country, less than twenty, and the average cost is in the 500- € range.
Of course, this can vary depending on the insurance [if the customer requests it] and the additional optional costs, that is why it is an average price.

Kind regards.

Some years ago I sold my Mauser African Special to one collector who lives in California. He has requested the importing licence with Ohio Ordnance. https://www.oowinc.com/
