1903 Receiver sight
      #279708 - 24/03/16 04:31 AM

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but I'm going to ask anyway. I would like to put a bolt release receiver sight on my 1903(I Think). My question is this: Does the sight come attached to a replacement bolt release or do yo have to modify one, and is there any modification of the stock for the slide required. I ask because my eyes are no longer good enough to use the barrel mounted rear sight. My biggest issue is that this is an all original, unmodified, and in very good condition rifle. I badly want to hunt with it, but have issue with the thought of irreversibly modifying it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Lance

Lance. Many of us experience this issue of declining eye sight; why won't you fit a nice small sized rifle scope (e.g. x4 magnification) on your rifle instead of a bolt release receiver sight? Regards. Louis

A scope would require WAY more modification than I am willing to do, and I am very competent with aperture sights. Thanks, though.

find a bolt mounted peep sight. I have put one on two of my Mausers. I don't use the peep to shoot but looking through it brings the rear sight into focus and I can then use the rear sight. I don't really trust the bolt mounted peep as on the Mauser there is some bolt slop so it doesn't line up perfectly every time. It still lines up enough to make the rear sight usable though.

Lance, there are a number of small, relatively inexpensive peep sights that can be fitted to the bolt of a 1903 that are similar to this one on a Rem LE 1907-15

The Lyman 36 receiver sight attaches to the bolt stop of a 1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle with little or no stock modification. Here is my 1903, which I obtained with the sight already in place:

Wow! Thanks guys. Phil, You never cease to amaze! That is too cool! Is that custom, or something that was made for that bolt in mind? Now I guess the big question is whether anyone has a line on a sight like Phil's or a Lyman 36 like Xausa's. I would be greatly interested in either.

Lance, I couldn't find that old King sight in any old catalog I have, and as rare as those Remington made 1907/15 Mannlicher Berthier rifles were in this country I doubt it was made specifically for it. I imagine it was adapted to fit the the long solid front of the cocking piece. In the current Rifle magazine I see John Barsness has a photo of his 1903 MS with a modern, inexpensive aluminum peep sight screwed on it. That would be the cheapest and most solid was to go. The old Lyman 36 sights are rare and bring well over $300 on E-bay and I have one on my 1903 and it works OK but is spring loaded and swings out of the way and then back every time you work the bolt.

Have a search on here for posts by kuduae - he has some useful information on this.
