H&H take down at gunstore
      #263989 - 22/04/15 08:55 AM

LGS has a Holland & Holland .375 belted take down .
I'd say it's in great shape for a one hundred year old rifle.
5000.00 ,I'll try to get some pics
Lucky for me I'm left handed.

speed, send me details please?

The early belted magnum takedowns were where the barrel and forend screwed off the action. Retained by bolt on right side of front ring. I have a post somewhere here showing mine.

Cheers,

Chris

That's about as cool as a Mannlicher can get IMO.
The barrel screw must be the big one on the underside.
Do they have the scope or case?

Did you decide to take it?

If not my best friend is in Calgary and I would get him to go take a look at it ....

I thought the screw on the bottom was the action screw and I didn't notice any scope mount or think
to ask about the case.

I´d buy that now if I didn´t have a "project" in the works, apart from being one of the coolest mannlichers I´ve ever seen the price is great, put that into Holts and you´d get quite a bit more I reckon, best

That looks to be a better takedown system than the standard M1910 takedown. The standard Mannlicher takedown system uses no action screws. It has what I would compare to a "patent breech" in the rear, and it has a rotating key in front of the trigger guard that releases the barreled action from the stock assembly. From my observation that system results in the barreled action being rather loose in its stock. The only one I have fired was very inaccurate, which I attribute to this looseness.

I would think this system results in a much better fit and grip between the action and stock. You can see it has conventional action screws. That's good. If there is a precise fit between the barrel and action, reasonable accuracy should result.

These aren't benchrest rifles, you know!

Curl,
It appears that you got a bad experience with a poor sample detachable stock Mannlicher-Schönauer rifle.
I have shot many of these rifles and I have hunted in mountain many years with a 6,5x54 1903 rifle in that quickly take apart pattern. It was scoped and delivered outstanding accuracy with the old 156 grains H-Mantel open nose RWS.
All the other Schönauer rifles with detachable stock I have tested at the range, 1903, 1905, 1910 and 1924 HV (30GVT, 7x64 or 8x60S) shot as accurately than the fixed stock ones.
I haven't fired a 1908 in that guise.
For the accuracy I think that the detachable stock system is much better than the screwed barrel and it's interesting to notice that Holland & Holland and Westley-Richards have adopted this Mannlicher system after WW1.
The trouble with hand screwed barrel is with the headspacing and it's what Holland patented their belted case.
Indeed that's only my opinion.
Best.

Thanks for that information. As stated, I have had experience only with one. Your broader experience tells me I should not generalize the failure of one example over the entire class.

+1 . My good friend has M-S 1910 with detachable stock and it's very accurate.
