How to tell if a Takedown?
      #259718 - 31/01/15 10:28 AM

Hello fellows!

May sound silly, but how do you tell if a mannlicher schoenauer (man-licker or man-licher? For pronounciation) is a takedown? I mean the system where barrelled action as stock are separated, not the way with the barrel unscrewing.

Cheers guys!

PS: are spare metal buttplates available from anywhere?

Ash, there will be a screw at the end of the forend on the right hand side with a knurled head of about 1/2" diameter as well as a rotational lever at the front of the trigger guard. There will also be an extended tang on top of the wrist grip with two screws. It is easy to pick, you won't have any problems.

Oh good.

Are they worth more as a takedown? Seems lots of them are in takedown configuration. Doesn't seem as handy a method as the barrel unscrew style.

Waidmannsheil - thanks. I'll call up about this one.

Ash, generally they are worth more than non-take down versions. Holland & Holland also use this method and the argument for is that you do not wear out barrel threads. With modern steels and heat treatment this is not generally a problem and may not have been then either, at least that was the advertising. In theory you are not separating the action from the barrel so accuracy should not be affected providing the stock bedding is good and not damaged. The take down model is actually quick to dis-assemble.

One good reason to make rifle as british take down is truth that the case you need for it is almost similar sized as normal shotgun case i.e. much more compact to carry than full sized normal rifle case. The time you built yours rifle up is not a issue because you´ll do it at the camp before going to hunt.

Thanks guys!

Next question: When did they start putting "Not English Make" on the barrels of M1910's? From the get go?

"NOT ENGLISH MAKE". For foreign guns imported into the UK. Proof rules of 1925, (5 August), to 1955.

So this one i'm looking at has it on the barrel, and he said his grandfather bought it in 1912?

Or does this not check out?
"The weapon belonged to my grandfather who purchased it circa 1912 and has been in a small country called Swaziland on the eastern side of Southern Africa. It has been passed down from my father to me and accompanied me when I emigrated to Australia in 2000."

Confused now.

You can tell the date of proof on the rifle from the Austrian proof stamp on the barrel.. a four digit number with a dot followed by a two digit number. The two digit number is the year of proof (Usually closely following manufacture of the rifle).

I know Swaziland a little, my father worked there in 1964, he was a Captain QM on secondment from the British army to the Swazi government at the time. Did a 12 month stint there & enjoyed it too. Nice country.

Takedowns in good condition are really nice rifles and give just a little more MV than the stutzens as they have a longer barrel. I have a M1903 takedown and would love also to get another M1924/1925 7x57 (.275 Rigby) stutzen. Delightful rifles and real treasures to use.
