How to date a Steyr-Mannlicher full-stock Model L 22-250?
      #252256 - 17/08/14 12:13 AM

I just picked up a near new condition (fired a few times) full-stock Steyr-Mannlicher Model L 22-250 carbine. Lacquer "piano" finish, full stock, DST, etc. I know its an early one because it has white line spacers, three-way safety (instead of the later two-way)and the mag release is on both sides at front of the trigger guard, not on the sides of the magazine itself.

I am familiar with establishing precise dates for my earlier Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles, but not for these. Is there a way to date these rifles? Are they marked in some way? Thanks.

Sincerely, Rob

I have a 1981 SL 223 Full Stock and there's a "X11 81" stamped below the serial number on the right side, which would be Dec,1981.

Thanks for the information. I must not have looked carefully enough, so I got out the OptiVisor.

I now see that there are three stamps below the four digit serial number. Two are proofmarks, followed by the number 68. They are repeated on the barrel adjacent to the receiver. So I guess its made in 1968. (First year of production, so thats a bonus)

Further down the barrel, on the right side just past the rear sight is also stamped the following:

0NM31/0-S+L+3

Any idea what this additional stamping might mean?

A lot of Mannlicher Schoenauer's have that stamp.I'm pretty sure it's an importer's stamp.(Stoeger etc.)

Nice rifle. I would have preferred an oil finish myself, but the lacquer finished 1968 rifle is the one that came my way and I do appreciate that its from the first year of production.

Do you have any idea where I might get a plastic part for the rifle?

When I took it out of the stock I noticed cracks in the plastic trigger guard/magazine well...some at the front and some at the back. I fixed them with glue, but would still prefer an uncracked part. It looked to me like the gun had never been out of the stock and over time the plastic cracked from the guard screw pressure.

Thanks, Rob

Thank you for the help. I don't know if they are for a model L. I also wonder about getting it into the country. Its very difficult to import anything termed a "gun part" into Canada these days.
